Match report An imperious 143 from Bradman Ediriweera and 5 wickets for skipper Chris Bird ensured Thatcham’s Sunday Border League campaign got off to a winning start at Purley.
Once again Thatcham were indebted to their Sri Lankan star as he dominated the proceedings in familiar style. Despite making regular inroads into the Thatcham line up, the Purley attack could do little to stem the flow as Ediriweera smashed 24 fours and a six in a masterful display. Only Martin Keep (24) offered any notable support but it didn’t matter to Thatcham as they amassed a competitive 214-6 in their 42 overs.
Thatcham took to the field in confident mood, but soon realised the game was still very much alive as Purley took a liking to the opening attack. Nathan Redmond was a little unlucky not to have Livingstone caught early on but with the opener in combative mood, the home side raced to 75 in just 10 overs. Desperate to stem the flow, Thatcham turned to Nick Bishop whose nagging line and length quickly restored some much needed discipline to the Thatcham bowling. When Bishop removed Livingstone’s equally belligerent partner Thiele for 30, Thatcham sensed an opening and the restriction of scoring opportunities put Thatcham back on the front foot.
With Livingstone still at the crease, Purley were very much in the game, but the introduction of spinner Chris Bird saw his demise as he was bowled through the gate attempting another expansive drive. Bird soon found his rhythm and two more wickets quickly followed to put Thatcham firmly in command. Nanan (39) and Holman (15) ensured things didn’t all go the visitors way but the task proved just to great as a fine piece of Tom Donnelly fielding saw Nanan run out to end the Purley innings on 198. Bird finished with 5-24 from his 9 overs as Thatcham picked up maximum points in a solid all round display.
