Match report Thatcham lost out to local rivals Falkland going down by 38 runs in last Sunday’s Border League encounter.

On a pitch that can only really be described as dry Falkland batted first hoping to make the most of a wearing pitch. Thatcham’s opening attack of Josh Winfield and Matt Taylor toiled in the heat and were rewarded with Taylor the first to strike removing Piper for 2. Winfield joined in taking a great return catch to dismiss Pitcher for 14 and Gilmour shortly after with the ball of his career. Andy Bolan and Ben Thomas came together and showed that positivity was the way forward, dispatching anything slightly short. But, with both gone for 40 and 30 respectively the Falkland innings looked in trouble at 102-6. However lower order contributions from Ryan Higgins (22) and Luke Day (31) propelled Falkland up to an above par 196. The returning Simon Rider the pick of the Thatcham attack with 3-21 from 5.1 overs.

Chris Rochfort and Danny Williams attempted a positive start but on a slowing pitch timing was getting increasingly difficult. The opening pair of Stephenson and Higgins asked a lot of questions that sadly the Thatcham top four had no answers to. At 36-4 and with 13 overs already gone the rebuilding process was left to Rider and Winfield. Both remained positive pushing the score up to 82 before Rider (18) departed edging Sam Trumper to stand in keeper Phil Piper. John Williams picked up the mantel and made use of the new ball adding 36 with Winfield until Stephenson returned to bowl him for 23. Winfield departed shortly after for a well crafted 29 but it was now an uphill struggle. Chris Bird, the nearly hero from the return fixture, tried to force the rate but could only edge Higgins through to Piper. Tom Owen and Matt Taylor gave the Thatcham faithful something to cheer playing shots that the top order would have been proud of. Pitcher wrapped up the innings to finish with 2-26 but Stephenson 3-29 and Higgins 3-25 bowled superbly for the hosts.
