Match report A strong Thatcham second eleven completed a comprehensive win at Purley on Sunday by 117 runs.

Batting first Iain Cottingham and Chris Barnes saw off a testing opening spell from Carter and Newham before stamping their authority on the game in fine style. Cottingham took the majority of the strike in the opening partnership which realised 114 in just 23 overs before he was bowled by Kupiec for 62.

Any hope Purley had of slowing things down were quickly dashed as Simon Rider joined Barnes and the pair scampered ones and twos to run the home side ragged and then capitalised on this by finding the boundary regularly. Both passed fifty with boundries and then the race to 100 was on. Rider went ahead after both reached the mid seventies but fell agonisingly short on 98 when he miscued to backward point.

Barnes needed 17 from the final over to reach a century but a good over from Newham put paid to that and he fell for 87 from the final ball of the over as Thatcham finished their 42 overs on 279-4.

Following a sumptuous tea Purley needed a flying start to have any hope but Gavin Ansell and John Williams put paid to that with a tight opening spell. Ansell took 1-31 from his nine overs and Williams 1-10 with six maidens. As the game opened up a little Hinds was able to pick up some runs but wickets continued to fall at the other end. Some good catching from Thatcham helped Dominic Melville and Andy Bayliss pick up two wickets each and as the game drifted to its conclusion Nathan Redmond and Chris Bird picked up one each in good spells. Purley finished on 162-8 with Hinds 64 not out.
