Match report Thatcham slumped to a second successive defeat at lowly Aldershot on Saturday to all but end their slim hopes of a late promotion push from Division 2b.

Having won the toss and electing to field first, Thatcham had the worst possible start as Aldershot raced to 40 without loss within just 4 wayward overs with Ryan Gilmour and Mike Green struggling to find any rhythm on an unresponsive surface. Despite the difficult opening, both Thatcham seamers worked tirelessly to drag things back but with Aldershot openers Alex Farr and Rory Collins (43) set, an imposing total looked likely.
The introduction of Alex Wood and Nick Bishop slowed things dramatically and Thatcham finally forced the breakthrough as a Collins' sweep looped to square leg for a simple catch. With his partner gone, Farr (61) went into his shell and with Chris Bird joining Bishop (5-42) in the attack, Thatcham began to exert pressure and wickets began to tumble. The spin veterans found considerable turn and bounce and when Bird (5-45) wrapped things up in the 50th over, Aldershot's 178 looked well under par. It was another fine turnaround from Thatcham, taking all ten wickets for under 80 runs following Aldershot's flying start and they went into the interval confident of a positive run chase.

Anticipating facing the old ball, Thatcham sent in Ryan Gilmour to open and the tactic worked perfectly as he raced to 30 in no time. But when one attempted six too many saw his downfall, Thatcham's batsmen struggled as Peter Spriggs, Rhys Williams and Jamie Young all failed to reach double figures. It was down to Jack Young (17) and Rhodri Lewis (26) to rebuild but whilst the duo were relatively untroubled, the runs dried to a trickle. Spinner Nick Davies (5-23) was the tormentor-in-chief as consolidation turned into stagnation in an uncharacteristic period for the usually aggressive partnership. It proved pivotal for Thatcham who never regained momentum and as they slumped to 120 all out in their most disappointing performance of the season.

Thatcham will look to get things back on track with the visit of Hurst on Saturday.
