Match report Thatcham IV entertained Wycombe Dragons II at Henwick on Saturday looking to avenge a heavy defeat from the opening fixture of the 2009 season.

The away side won the toss and chose to bat on an overcast day. Thatcham made early in roads into the Wycombe Dragons side with Ben Cruise taking 2 early wickets to reduce the visiting side to 37 for 2 in the 11 over. However a third wicket stand of exactly 100 runs swung things back in the Dragons favour. It took the experience of Tony Wimbush making his season debut to break the partnership as he bowled Scouse for 52. Tom Owen then got his only wicket of the innings as he became Nik Stewart’s first of 3 brilliant stumpings when he was removed for a duck. This only brought about another big partnership as Wycombe’s number 2 N Martin (74) was joined at the crease by his captain A Childs (76 not out). They set about taking the attack to the Thatcham bowlers in a 5th wicket partnership of 97. It was the returning Tristan Allen who managed to slow things down a fine second spell, which included 4 wickets in 4 overs for only 11 runs as he finished with figures of 8 overs – 1 maiden – 32 runs – 4 wickets. The Wycombe captain elected to bat the full 52 overs as the visiting team finished on 270 for 8, effectively batting Thatcham out of the game.

A stand of 58 between Thatcham openers Micky Stone and Dave Taylor got the home team off to a good start before Taylor was the first victim of the innings when he was bowled for 17. Stone looked extremely comfortable at the crease and his team mates batted around him, pushing the singles in order to get him on strike. However, with such a big target to chase Thatcham’s main task was to try and bat the full 48 overs, thus denying the Dragons a 25 point win. As the rain started to get heavier, Stone was continuing to play the visiting attack with ease and with only a few overs to spare he brought up a magnificent century with a boundary. Thatcham’s innings closed on 198 for 7 from their 48 overs, with Stone unbeaten on 104.
