Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham XI- Wednesday v Harwell International on Wed 30 May 2012 at 6.10
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report After all the early season rain the first home game of the season finally took place at Brownsfield. Another side composed of a selection of the club's promising crop of youngsters supported by some seniors took to the field as visitors Harwell batted first. A decent mid-week crowd featuring mums, dads, Cottie + pooch, Dan Stone (who was having a beer to calm his nerves just before his latest ante-natal class) and co did the obligatory clockwise laps in support. Aaron Voller (0/19) opened up from the northern end and bowled a tight 3 over spell. Nathan Redmond (1/27) also played a part in the early containment, dismissing opener Coat for 6. Up stepped pick of the bowlers Tom Allison at 1st change and delivered for his side, picking up 1/17 from his 24 balls, including the dismissal of J. Nutter (0), who's batting performance suited his surname - in an incident Olympic triple jumper Jonathan Edwards would have been proud of he incredulously hopped over a straight one and lost his leg stump. Arthur Edwards produced an inspired throw from cow corner to run out opener R. Stewart with a direct hit. Will Rowsell (2/28) also impressed at the pavilion end in having to contend with the aggressive R. Deshmukh (17) before calmly assisting in his run out; and brought to an end the captain Rick Tanner's vigil of 33. Ballbag (Josh Winfield) bowled the final over for just 5 runs and took 2 wickets.
Chasing a respectable 126 to win, with a short scorebox-side boundary and plenty of batting in the hutch Thatcham were confident. Out of form Matt Denness turned up for his long-anticipated Benefit Match and opened up with another promising U15 youngster Jamie Shields. Denness slowly shrugged off the cobwebs like an adder sloughing its skin for a tidy 31, whilst Shields improved Den’s fitness running rapid 1s and 2s. Shields approached a deserved 50 before being unfortunately run out at the non-striker’s end, Arthur Edwards the guilty straight-driving merchant. The Nathanator’s finger was straight up and Shields departed for an excellent 44.
Arthur Edwards batted sensibly before tripping over himself attempting a helicopter drive off a wide ball that was missing off stump by 16 feet, and tweaked a knee ligament, before trudging off retired hurt (20*) and contemplating a long bike ride back down the A4 to Beenham. Unlucky. That brought captain Chris Rochfort to the crease and with new batsman Josh Winfield not yet in his stride, 5 off the final 8-ball over from returning opening bowler Sam Withers was perhaps harder than it looked. The normal boundary-destroying Winfield failed to score off the first 2 - then got bowled (if that was surprising he then volunteered to run the bar afterward...) So in strolled in-form youngster Peter Spriggs to the crease with 5 still needed. After an exchange of singles, Rochfort was left needing 2 off the last ball, a situation that needn’t have arisen as umpire Eddie Wylie cost his side by signalling a leg bye for what was in fact a wide and denying his team the extra run and extra ball. With the field close and the bowler’s tail up, Rochy produced a brisk back-foot on-drive which pierced the leg-side field for 4, saving the Cheesecake’s blushes. Awfully sorry Mr Withers, but do stay for the chicken and pizza.
Thanks to everyone for the off-the-field assistance opening up and shutting up shop, I will let you know if it satisfied Frank Bird’s high standards... Next up on 6 June at Brownsfield is Kennet Pirates (Kennet School), featuring a few Thatcham CC colts, so much good-humoured banter is no doubt in store – and the Cheesemonger himself Eddie Wylie will be promoted into the top order. Till next week.
