Match report Thatcham Mighty Trouts Sweep Aside Quantel

What a glorious evening for a cricket match. With supporters lining the boundary ropes in droves and plenty of beer sales (thanks again to barman Nick Voller), the Quantel openers walked out into the Brownsfield House of Pain. The core of the Mighty Trouts side continues to be the U15 and U17 colts and right-arm / left-arm seam combo Aaron Voller and Shiva Karthikeyan took the opening bowling responsibilities. Shiva’s figures were most impressive collecting 2/11 from his first 2, sandwiched between Cheesemonster Wylie’s run out from 3rd man, before the opening pair made way after 4 overs with the score 27/3 for U15 Will Rowsell and U13 Ben Denton-Powell. Both the first change bowlers had to endure the wrath of Dixon (29) and former Town colt Lewis Rogers (23) who hit 4 maximums between them with largely applaudable strokes and showing no mercy to the bad ball. The youngsters can only learn from the experience and Rowsell got his team the vital wicket of Dixon.

With some sloppy fielding including numerous dropped catches; 1 entertaining Matt Taylor misjudgement at long off; and Jack Young being no-balled for having his gloves in front of the wickets, some of the expectant onlooking beer-drinking local delinquents, including Willo, Nath, Gibbo, Chapstick and the Hulk Josh Winfield, were demanding a more ruthless fielding performance and certainly made their feelings known. There were a few cringeworthy moments as Town fielders were laughed or hissed at, notably Taylor for the long-off incident and Nick Monger when he shelled one at point. The baying crowd hinted that the rot could be stopped with the introduction of Monger as chants of “Mong, Mong, Mong” rang around the ground in a moment of déjà vu from Saturday. Mongman was introduced for his customary death bowling spell and sure enough reaped the rewards from his first over, collecting 2/17 from 3, and denied more as at least 3 catches went down off his bowling as the batsmen took him on. With a couple of whispers from the delinquents that captain Rochy should not have left all the youngsters on the leg side to face the red ball barrage, I would counter that the youngsters will learn nothing watching Simon Rider catching skiers in the deep. Challenge the kids to cope with the high bombs, I say.
Jamie Shields went luckless before Aaron Voller and Shiva Karthikeyan returned for their 3rd overs to finish with impressive figures of 1/20 and 3/15 respectively.

Chasing 124 to win, youngsters Jack Young and Jamie Shields were tasked with making a solid, positive start. This they did but after Shields (8) was bowled by the spin of Thornton, Eddie Wylie had a rare opportunity up the order and took his chance. Together with Young, the pair launched an impressive attack on the Quantel bowling, the most eye-catching being the Cheesecake’s sweep-slog over a very long mid wicket boundary. Only Wayne Knape (1/22) emerged with any credit as the boundary ropes continued to be peppered, one Thornton over going for 20. The extras were a major earner as well with 20 runs worth of wides and no balls. Such was the dominance that with 5 overs left only 6 runs were required. There was still time for Wylie (40) to get out, leaving Nick Monger (2*) and Young (32*) to finish the game and await the pizza delivery.

The Mighty Trouts stretched their winning run to 8 consecutive games as the exciting title race with local rivals Cold Ash and dark horses Woolley Badgers continues to the wire. Town and Cold Ash are both on 24 points but despite having 2 games in hand on Cold Ash, these games look unlikely to be rearranged with Steventon and Sutton Courtenay elusive as to possible dates and the evenings beginning to shorten. If both are declared no result that only nets Town 2 points leaving the final game of the season a winner takes all affair, assuming the teams match each other for results in the next two fixtures.
And next is the local derby against Kennet School team Kennet Pirates, where Matt Taylor has been promised a bowl against his former teachers, and even more familiar faces turn out to test us including Tommy Mather, Owen Jenkins and former club skipper Danny Williams.
The other highlight was about £270 was taken behind the bar, a welcome return with the club’s income decimated by this summer's weather.
