Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Basingstoke & North Hants on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show for Thatcham as they followed their astonishing victory against Windsor with a below par effort in the field to lose to Basingstoke and North Hants on Saturday.

Put in on a track that offered the bowlers help from the start Thatcham struggled against the movement and accuracy of James throughout. Simon Rider (22), Daniel Stone and Paul Jenkins (17) all got themselves in before rather giving it away and at the halfway point they had reached 81-4.
Ali Naqvi, who played despite illness and Chris Rochfort then showed the way as they dug in before opening up as they got more settled. Naqvi passed fifty and was looking very threatening when he fell to the impressive James for 80, ending a partnership of 104. Rochfort soon followed for a gritty 35 before Robb Fraser (16) ensured Thatcham gained maximum points as they closed on 211-8 from their allotted 52 overs. James bowled throughout and ended with excellent figures of 6-84 and received good support from Bradley with 2-53.

Vinn and Foxley made a quick start before Naqvi and Jason Williams started to rein them back in and Naqvi broke through, trapping Vinn lbw for 22. Giles soon followed for 9 and when Rouse was well caught at slip by Chris Bird Basingstoke were 51-3 from 15 overs.
McDonnell helped Foxley add 41 before he fell to Nick Bishop (1-18) but the visitors had only victory in mind as Thankachan played positively and with Foxley now well set Basingstoke appeared comfortable.
The return of the opening pair brought Thatcham right back into the game as Williams (1-68) removed Foxley for 74 and Naqvi struck twice in an over to make it 149-7 with ten overs left. Coombs was down the order due to injury but it didn’t hamper his strokeplay and he took the attack straight back to Thatcham, receiving good support from James whose good form with the ball also transferred to his batting.
As Thatcham’s fielding dropped in intensity the batsmen grew more confident and they eventually got home with five balls to spare, Coombs on 43 and James 24. Naqvi bowled superbly again, finishing with 5-68 from 18 overs but ultimately Thatcham will feel it was a game they possibly should have won but definitely should not have lost.
