Match report Thatcham secured their Thames Valley division 1 status despite a disappointing 60 run defeat at league leaders Burnham on Saturday.
With fellow strugglers Wokingham picking up just 4 points and heavy losses for Windsor and Maidenhead & Bray, the Brownsfield outfit can now look forward to another year in the top flight after what has proved a difficult, yet ultimately successful season.
On a wet, slow wicket, Thatcham had no hesitation in inserting the home side but failed to take advantage of the favourable conditions as openers Rehman (82) and Chaudrey (21) dominated proceedings. Fazal (51) and Khan (35) continued to bat with freedom as an undisciplined bowling and fielding display saw Burnham quickly reach 200. With wickets in hand and overs to spare, an imposing total looked inevitable but some poor shot selection and an improved effort from Nick Bishop (4-41) and Chris Bird (3-61) sparked a late batting collapse with the final 6 wickets falling for just 11 runs.
Despite the collapse, Burnham’s 213 was always going to be tough to challenge with the wicket still producing appreciable turn. Promising starts from John Williams, Josh Winfield and Dan Stone all failed to yield significant runs as the prolific Khan (7-53) tormented the Thatcham batsmen. Only Ali Naqvi (67) came to terms with the wicket and Khan’s consistency and Thatcham were dismissed for 153 in little over 40 overs.
Thatcham entertain High Wycombe at Brownsfield on Saturday, with skipper Danny Williams demanding an improved performance in the final game of the season.
