Match report Thatcham 2XI traveled to Marlow Park in the bottom of the table 4B fixture with high expectations of recording their third win of the season, which was duly achieved via a good team performance with the stand-out performances coming from Tim Mahoney 6-65 with the ball and Simon Rider 122 not out with the bat.
To the surprise of visiting skipper Iain Cottingham, Marlow decided to bat on an untypical damp green Marlow wicket. Marlow openers Harris and Burton struggled against the youthful opening attack of Jack Andrews and Josh Winfield, a couple of chances went begging before Winfield bowled Harris for 5, bringing in the dangerous Miller, who elegantly stroked his first ball to the extra cover boundary. After an injury scare to Andrews he was replaced by Matt Taylor, who then had Millet dropped at mid wicket. Further bowling changes were made to secure the next break through with veterans Mahoney and Nick Bishop using their experience to bowl line and length to the Marlow batsmen, after Cottingham left the field after taking a blow to the mouth, Mahoney had Millett well caught by Rider at backward point, leaving Marlow at 65-2.
At this point Harris decided to drop anchor as Mahoney used his extensive repertoire to work his way through Marlow’s middle order, once Harris was dismissed by Bishop for a well crafted 61 and despite a few lusty blows the Marlow innings closed on a below par 207 all out in the 52nd over, with Mahoney being the stand out performer with the ball with figures of 19.3-4-65-6 with Bishop and Winfield the other wicket takers.

After tea openers Rider and Winfield started cautiously against the old ball Marlow attack, realising that no soft dismissals were to be given to Marlow.
With 11 runs off the first 8 overs Rider started to play his shots, straight driving and cutting anything short, ably supported by Winfield (15) before Butt had him caught at deep mid wicket, Thatcham were 68-1 after 19 overs.
Steve Bartholomew (15) then joined Rider who then took the score to 102-2 after 26 overs, then came the match winning partnership between Rider and Matt Denness using all of their experience, dispatching the bad ball and “frisky” running between the wickets the pair imposed their personality on the game.
Rider duly arrived at a chanceless 100 and moved serenely onto a majestic 122 not out (16x4 1x6) before Denness 42 not out hit the winning run in the 44 over. The win now leaves Thatcham 1 point behind Cove III in their quest to avoid a second successive relegation.
