Match report A dismal batting display saw Thatcham slip to their fourth defeat of the season away to High Wycombe’s 2XI. With a weakened line up Robb Fraser opted to field on winning the toss and Brad Ediriweera and Andy Harland (1-31) got them off to a fine start, reducing the home side to 32-4 after 13 overs with the Sri Lankan picking up three of those wickets and Harland unlucky to only get one.

However, Janved and Russell then formed a key partnership, the former playing his shots and Russell playing the defensive role until the bowlers strayed onto his pads when he put everything away. Chris Bird kept things tight and the introduction of Fraser (2-29) brought about the end of the partnership at 85 as he got Janved for 54.

Russell set himself to bat through the rest of the innings while the lower order came in to up the tempo which resulted in 69 from the last 10 overs. Bird finally got some reward for his perseverance when he bowled Robinson but Russell and Dowling added an unbroken 51 to take the score to 209-7 from their 52 overs. Ediriweera finished with 3-44 and Bird 1-57 from 18 overs.

Harland was promoted to open the innings with four regular batsmen missing and along with Ediriweera added 19 before Robinson broke through Harland’s defence and dismissed him for 8. Unfortunately this proved to the highest partnership of the innings as left armer Robinson got the ball to swing both ways and the Thatcham batsman were unable to cope.

In his fifth over he bowled Daniel Stone for 2 and trapped Rakesh Patel lbw for 0. Matt Denness and Ediriweera then dug in but runs dried up and they added just 16 in 11 overs when the vital breakthrough came in Parven’s first over as the Sri Lankan fell lbw for 25. It was soon 47-5 as Fraser dragged one on from the same bowler and Robinson got his fourth when he yorked Bird.

Peter Edgcombe looked to play positively before Woodroffe bowled him for 9 and at the halfway point of the innings Thatcham were 60-7. Michael Hayes, playing his first 1XI match for 15 years them showed the top order that survival was not impossible as he and Denness set about trying to draw the game. Both players took several blows to the body as the wicket became somewhat unpredictable but they stayed together for nine overs before Denness was unlucky to glove one down the legside and he was gone for 12.

The end was near but Steve Bartholomew hit a couple of lusty blows before holing out and then Woodroffe ended Hayes’ brave rearguard as Thatcham were dismissed for 89. The pick of the attack was Robinson who took 4-27 from 13 hostile overs.
