Match report Thatcham Town’s 4th string travelled to Yateley 3’s this week and walked away with heads held high, after an emphatic victory.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Thatcham opened with the skipper, Gavin Ansell (11-3-6-14) and Shiva Karthikeyan (7-2-2-14). Straight away, both bowlers hit their straps and both made their first strikes during their 3rd overs, removing both openers, with the score on 16. From there, it was a regular precession of wickets, as the Thatcham bowlers continued to attack the stumps on the bowler friendly wicket. The inconsistent bounce, in addition to accounting for many of the batsmen, also provided the wicket keeper with problems.
Tom Alison (3-0-1-8), replacing Karthikeyan, continued the fine Thatcham bowling effort and accounted for Yateley’s most resistant batsman, James Birch (8). Yateley were hugely disappointed to have been bowled out for 50 in only 21 overs. With excellent efforts in the field and all 3 bowlers achieving season best figures, Thatcham were more than happy!! No batsman made double figures, with extras (22), by far the highest scorer.

Thatcham knew that their task would never be as easy as the scorebook suggested, and so it was, with openers Darren Sopp (8) and Peter Spriggs (2) falling cheaply, against some fine bowling from Andy Davies and Ismail Akhtar. Tommy Mather (9*) came in at three and looked to steady the ship, which he did with ease and a sense of tremendous calm, proving that there remains an old head on those young shoulders!
Debutant Rakman Toothakael (11) looked to take a more aggressive approach to the low total, only to be undone by a fine slower ball from Akhtar. Fellow debutants James O’Connor and Jamie Woolard were both unlucky to be out early, playing on. Richard Lavender (12*) came in at number seven and put Yateley out of their misery quickly, finishing as top scoring batsman on the day, hitting two fine boundaries, to give Thatcham victory by 5 wickets.

Having been unlucky not to win the previous match against Falkland, Thatcham were grateful for their first win of the season, claiming 20 points to Yateley’s 2.
