Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v Cold Ash on Sun 24 Apr 2011 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 15 runs

Match report Thatcham Town played hosts to our friends from Cold Ash Cricket Club, as part of our pre-season friendly schedule. On a warm and sunny day, Cold Ash won the toss and elected to bat first.

Thatcham opened the bowling with Gavin Ansell (6-3-3-14) and Matt Taylor (6-2-1-15), both of whom bowled good lines and found some early season movement to reduce Cold Ash to 33 for 4 after 12 overs. Thatcham then turned to the spin twins of Tom Owen and Adam Mather. Both youngsters were taking the field for the first time this season and were looking to get some overs under their belts, prior to a long season ahead. Because of this, we saw some great balls, mixed with some loose deliveries. Tom Owen (8-0-0-63), in particular, was unlucky to find Paul Roberts in fine form, ably assisted by Tom Saunders and son Ollie Roberts. Adam Mather (8-1-2-27) conversely, started very well, varying his pace and flight well to challenge all the batsmen through his first 6 overs, though did struggle more so in his final two overs as the strong sun began to take it’s toll. Nathan Redmond (3.3-0-2-14) and Alistair Cooper (3-0-2-22) came on at the end and both initially struggled with their length, but were good enough to pick up two wickets a piece and mop up the tail to dismiss Cold Ash for a decent total of 180 all out from 34.3 overs.

In reply, Thatcham opened with the aggressive pairing of John Williams and Josh Winfield. Looking to attack early, on a wicket that was slowing with every delivery, John Williams fell early for an unfortunate duck. This brought Joe Harwood to the wicket, after virtually 3 years in the wilderness due to injuries and rugby commitments. Both batsmen struggled to time the ball to great effect, but gradually began to build a partnership of 44, ended when Harwood was caught for an encouraging 20. Tom Mahoney joined Winfield and looked comfortable, as he looked to find some form before the TVL league games arrive. Josh Winfield played well, until he was adjudged L.B.W. for a fine 36. Nathan Redmond came and went at number 5 for a duck, which brought Alistair Cooper to the wicket. Mahoney and Cooper looked to up the scoring rate, until the former fell for an encouraging 18. Dave Taylor, at 7, built a fine partnership of 54 with Cooper, but when Cooper was bowled for 30, no one else could support Taylor, who was the last man out for 21. Thatcham were dismissed for 165 and lost the game by 15 runs.

Though it was a disappointing loss for the Thatcham boys, the main points of the game were surpassed... both batsmen and bowlers got some valuable match practice and a great day was had by all. Many thanks to Charlotte Andrews for providing the mid-innings teas.
