Maidenhead & Bray v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 12.30
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 31 runs

Match report Thatcham’s second eleven slipped into fourth place in Thames Valley Division 3B but are not out of the promotion race as only 10 points separate them from Saturday’s opponents Maidenhead & Bray with two games left.

The home side batted first and looked to be positive from the off. Paul Jenkins (1-37) removed the dangerous looking Parker to a catch behind the stumps by the impressive Steve Bartholomew who cancelled an important fishing match to make himself available for this game. Rakesh Patel (1-31) struck soon after but the loss of two quick wickets didn’t deter the batters who still looked to score off almost every ball.

The introduction of Chris Bird and Tim Mahoney put Thatcham firmly in the driving seat as Patel took the first of three catches to remove Arjan for 36 and Mahoney struck in the next over as another attacking shot was punished. Dean and Clements took the score to 100 before four wickets fell for nine runs, two each to Bird and Mahoney.

However, Evans, dropped down the order to 8 found an ally in Taylor and they steadily rebuilt the innings, adding 54 for the ninth wicket. Evans drove very well through the ‘V’ and didn’t an offer a chance throughout his innings. Bird finally trapped Taylor for 16 but Parham survived for 33 balls to allow Evans to pass 50 and take the score up to 189 before he became Bird’s fifth victim. The left armer finished with with 5-55 from 17.2 overs with Mahoney taking 3-54 from 14.

An injury to Billy Beaumont meant Chris Bird moved up the order to partner the returning wanderer Stuart Gregory and they made a steady start against some tight new ball bowling from Coyne and Parker. The pair were starting to get on top when Bird was unfortunate to edge into his pad and back onto his stumps for 23. Jenkins followed in the next over and when Sean Huckins and Patel fell in similar fashion to Bird four wickets had fallen for 13.

Gregory looked settled but a injudicious stroke saw him bowled for 21 and at 52-5 and a longer than normal tail Robb Fraser and Perry Moore knew their partnership needed to get Thatcham close to their target. Fraser was more circumspect than normal while Moore unleashed some trademark off drives. They added 36 before Fraser was unlucky to be trapped in front by one that kept low but Bartholomew continued his impressive display by knuckling down with his captain.

The pair had added 22 when Parham got one to turn back into Moore and he was bowled for a fighting 33. The experienced Tim Mahoney then joined young Bartholomew and decided that aggression was the best way forward. He contributed a run a ball 27 and brought Thatcham within 38 runs of victory with 10 overs left when a mix up in the calling saw him run out. Beaumont bravely came in to try to hold up an end so Bartholomew (16) decided to try to finish the game quickly but his battling innings was brought to an end when he just failed to clear mid on. The last rites were administered soon afterwards when Evans capped a fine display by bowling Jamie Bishop and the home side had their victory by 31 runs.
