Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v Kew III on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 20 runs
Match report
Thatcham Town 3rd XI played hosts to top of the table Kew 3's last Saturday. With a strong side out, Thatcham were confident of getting atleast the lions share of the points. Thatcham won the toss and decided to bat first.
Thatcham's started with the pairing of Tom Donnelly and Bob Gadsden. The innings started worryingly, Donnelly bowled for a duck in the third over. Thatcham weren't too worried though, as this bought Ravi Mirchandani in to join Gadsden and both batsmen had been in fine form of late. Mirchandani looked to play the dominant role, scoring quickly. The pair put on 97 for the 2nd wicket, when Gadsden was given LBW for 35. Martin Keep came and went at number four for only 2 runs. Liam Redmond joined Mirchandani batting at number five. They took the Thatcham score up to 140-3, before Mirchandani saw his stumps pegged back, trying one shot too many, gone for an excellent 83. Steve Bartholomew came in at six for Thatcham, but both men went fairly soon after, scoring 27 and 17 respectively. There was little further resistance offered by Thatcham, as their innings trickled to a close, on 186 all out from only 45 overs.
At the start of the Kew innings, Thatcham decided to take to old ball and open the bowling with the spin of Jon Sabberton and Tom Donnelly. Both bowled exceptionally well, so much so that after 10 overs, Kew had stumbled to 7-1, Donnelly trapping the Kew captain, Jon Bailey for 6. The pair of spinners continued to bowl tightly in tandem until the end of the 23rd over, when Donnelly's spell came to an end, 11-5-1-36. The Thatcham Skipper brought himself on for a few overs, still with the old ball, but didn't look like taking a wicket, 4-0-0-16. Mirchandani was brought on after Ansell, and bowled well to get the important wicket of J. Berry(31).
With the Kew innings now on 105-5 after the 38th over, Thatcham could now start to think about victory. Mirchandani (4-2-1-9) was replaced by the new ball bowler, Nick Voller. His first couple of overs were with the old ball, as Sabberton continued his marathon spell from the other end. They proved to be ineffective though, so Thatcham took the new ball at the start of the 44th over. This meant Sabberton had to come off, having bowled brilliantly, 22-9-4-54. This allowed the pace of Will Clarke and Nick Voller to bowl with a new cherry. Clarke was very unlucky not to get wickets, as he proved to be too quick for the Kew batsmen who could only get the outside edge to his bowling, slashing over the infield on several occasions. Voller at the other end was having far more fun, now using the new ball. In his final 3.4 overs, he took 4 wickets to wrap up the Kew innings at 166 all out. Voller and Clarke's figures were 5.4-0-4-21 and 3-0-0-25 respectively.
This gave Thatcham Town the maximum 25 points to take them back to the top of Division 6B of the Thames Valley Morrant League, 7 points clear of second place Datchet. Thatcham Town 3's travel away to 4th place Teddington Town 2's next Saturday, keen to get revenge for the defeat inflicted by Teddington earlier in the season.
