Eversley IV v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 02 Sep 2006 at 12.30
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 2 wickets

Match report Thatcham’s trip to Arborfield Garrison to play Eversley 4s was expected to be cancelled, due to the promised torrential rain. So, everyone was rather pleased to get a game in. Thatcham fought a close game through the wind but were unable to defend their 152 total, falling 2 wickets short. However, the 10 points gained in defeat secured a commendable 3rd place in the league.

Thatcham won the toss and, electing to bat, got off to a good start. Mick Stone and Kieran Lynch putting on 42 for the first wicket and then Kieran and Paul Sharp putting on 25 for the second. When Paul was out in the 15th over Thatcham were looking good at 67 for 2. However a mid order collapse left Thatcham at 88 for 5 when Nick Monger joined Kieran at the wicket in the 20th over. Nick and Kieran and then Nick and Dave Wells led a recovery but with the loss of both of them by the 29th over the last 3 wickets fell quickly leaving Thatcham all out for 152 after only 32.4 overs.

At the tea interval most felt that with the huge boundaries and the conditions more conducive to bowling than batting, a total of 150 was something that Thatcham could defend. With 67 overs to chase 150, it was obvious that the question would be whether Thatcham could take 10 wickets before Eversley got the runs.

Thatcham opened with Simon Chapple and Ben Cruise who managed to take 3 wickets between them in the first 10 overs. The introduction of Nick Monger had immediate effect when he took 2 wickets for 1 run in his opening over to leave Eversley at 66 for 5 off 22 overs.

Eversley’s 6th and 7th wicket partnerships of 34 and 24 respectively took them to 124 for 7 in the 37th over. Even as Thatcham changed round the bowling in search of wickets, the runs were leaking away and by the time Cruise took his 3rd wicket, the 8th of the innings, in the 42nd over the run total stood at 141.

The dying overs saw an agonising couple of missed catches and stumps flying in all directions off a no ball as well as delighted applause from the boundary, as Eversley’s N. Trapani passed 50 for the first time in his cricketing career. It was perhaps fitting that it was Trapani that scored the winning runs in the 46th over. The final scores: Thatcham Town CC 4th XI – 152 all out Vs, Eversley CC 4th XI – 153 for 8. Eversley win by 2 wickets.

Thatcham were left to rue not batting out the overs for a few more runs and giving away 45 extras in such a close game.

This brings to an end a successful first season in the Thames Valley Cricket League for Thatcham 4th XI. The highlight of the season has been the introduction of some talented youngsters, who have not only broken into the senior teams but have also prospered.
