Match report Thatcham Town CC comfortably overcame Berkshire League side Sandhurst by 86 runs on Sunday to breeze into a second round tie against local rivals Falkland CC, the fixture scheduled for Sunday May 14th.

Having lost the toss and being put into bat, Thatcham stuttered to 48 for 3 after the early losses of Julian Wood, James Ettridge (30) and Matt Denness, however club skipper Duncan Johnson (82) and Paul Jenkins (40) posted an excellent 118 run fourth wicket stand to restore order and then swift contributions from Chris Wright (52), Andy Harland (30) and a quickfire 24 not out by Pete Edgcombe enabled the home side to close their innings on an impressive 311 for 8 from their 45 over allocation.

Sandhurst set about chasing down the daunting total with some success, Saunders in particular showing excellent early resistance to the opening pairing of Wood and Harland before expanding his game on a slow wicket to notch an excellent half century. Saunders was well supported by Sussex (51) in an 86 run second wicket partnership but once Johnson (2 for 50) had disposed of the former for 61, Thatcham turned the screw and wickets fell at regular intervals, especially to Nick Bishop, who enjoyed the most success, bagging 5 for 41 from his 8 over stint.

The visitors continued to chase runs, taking advantage of the short sided boundary to good effect, with useful knocks coming from Tutty (22) and C Pharo (18) but wickets continued to fall all the while and when Jamie Bishop returned to the attack to grab the last wicket, Sandhurst’s gallant chase was over on 225 all out in the 43rd over.
