Hayes v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Thatcham lost at rock bottom Hayes on Saturday, putting in a disappointing performance which belied their recent good form in TVL 2b, as they went down by 7 wickets on a scorching West London afternoon.

The visitors will be sick of the sight of Hayes skipper Karanpreet Singh who hit an unbeaten 116 at Brownsfield back in May and then followed this up by winning the game for his side with an unbeaten 92 on Saturday.

Earlier in the day Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and elected to bat, although 30 minutes and 9 overs later he was probably wishing he hadn't as his side were reduced to 15-4! Peter Spriggs played on for 6, Scott Gibson lbw for 3, the in form Felix Hartley Russell bowled for 4 and Tom Mahoney didn't trouble the scorers as he left one which nipped back and clipped the top of his off stump. Wayland and Kulvinder the chief destroyers for the home side. Duncan Johnson and Jack Young started to slowly rebuild the damage putting on 27 together before Young was bowled for 18. This bought in the big hitting Josh Winfield who counter attacked brilliantly and proceeded to smash the Hayes bowling to all parts. He had reached a quick 43, including four 4's and three 6's when Momi held a spectacular one handed caught and bowled to send him on his way. Callum Johnson joined his skipper who had carefully anchored the innings using all his experience until he dragged a wide delivery on to his stumps for 18. The senior Johnson was rightly frustrated at his dismissal, but having come in at 15-4 and departing at 104-7, he had done a fine job for his side. The lower order continued to chip away with welcome boundaries and good running, Des Hartley Russell reaching 12 before he was stumped. Callum Johnson compiled a useful 27 before a rush of blood saw him caught on the boundary and it was left to the last pair of John Williams and Chris Bird to try and get their side to a defendable total. They came together at 140 with 10 overs still to bat and both were looking in excellent touch. Williams selectively picking the balls to clear the ropes with and Bird as stubborn as always, employing his favoured 'slog sweep' whenever he could. They had reached 169 before Bird was lbw for 12 to Kulvinder and the visitors had been bowled out in 47.1 overs, giving Hayes 52 in which to reach the 170 runs required for victory.

Thatcham took the old ball and Chris Bird and Duncan Johnson opened up with men round the bat in a bid to strangle the Hayes reply. Things started promisingly as Bird struck in the very 1st over, Sidhu caught at the wicket for 4. Sharma was next to go in Bird's 2nd over as he charged down the wicket and was stumped by Jack Young for 1. It was here that things started to go wrong for the visitors as Singh and Momi repaired the damage. Momi showed little regard for patience as anything up to him got the full treatment and he followed up his earlier half century at Thatcham with another 31 before the pace of Des Hartley Russell induced an edge which Chris Bird safely held at 1st slip. 79-3 and Thatcham knew if they could get the Hayes skipper quickly, the game would be right in the balance. Karanpreet Singh however is a difficult man to dislodge and he went through his full array of strokes to dishearten the visitors and he found a useful partner in Mahmood who defended stoutly and waited for the bad delivery to despatch to the boundary. Fittingly it was Singh who hit the winning runs to reach 92 not out, Mahmood 28 not out and a valuable 20 points to the bottom side, who now close the gap on the sides above.

Thatcham find themselves in mid table, but with just 32 points separating 2nd place Boyne Hill on 143 points from last place Hayes on 111 points, it's literally only the runaway leaders Stoke Green on 227 points who can rest easy in the coming fixtures. Thatcham travel to the leaders on Saturday and will be looking to put in a far better performance and ease the disappointment of the trip to Hayes.
