Thatcham 2nd XI finished the season with their most comfortable win of the season as they beat British Airways 2nd XI by 9 wkts at brownsfield on Saturday.
Winning the toss Skipper Stephen Bird decided to take full advantage of the overcast conditions and elected to field. The decision soon paid off as O’Flynn and Mahoney reduced the away side to 12 for 2 as both found a perfect line and length in the helpful conditions. Malik and Ahmed started to repair the damage as both play a combination of hard hitting and controlled play.

The introduction of the spinning duo of Bishop and Moore ensure Thatcham took charge of the game as Bishop removed Malik for 45. Raheem joined Ahmed at the wicket and continued where Malik had left off but fell fowl of the age old mistake by batsmen who don’t look before they run as he turn blind and was smartly run out by Howell from short fine leg.

Ahmed reached his 50 as he looked to take charge of the away side’s innings but was removed soon after, caught by Young off Moore. Thatcham dominated the game from this point onwards as Moore (3 for 50) and Bishop (4 for 44) combined to remove the remaining 5 British Airways wickets as the away side total stuttered to 181.

The 182 set by the away side for victory was never going to be enough on another excellent Thatcham wicket but the home sides reply could not have been more convincing as the opening pair of Andy Harland and Steve Bartholomew made huge inroads into the total with an opening stand of 92 before Harland (55) was adjudged LBW having just reached a well-deserved half century.

Bartholomew was joined by Simon Gale (27) at the wicket and it was this pair that took Thatcham to victory with an unbroken stand of 90. Bartholomew’s pivotal innings was one of great maturity as he calmly went about his business reaching his 50 in spectacular style striking a colossal leg side six eventually finishing 64 not out after he majestically hit the winning runs.
