Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v COVE on Sat 16 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm

Match report Thatcham had a frustrating afternoon playing Cove in their TVL first division match…….

Thatcham lost the toss and were inserted on what was to be a frustrating afternoon. It was a far from ideal start with Steve Wyatt fell to the first ball of the innings from Sinha. Daniel Stone was soon to follow wafting at a wayward delivery from Neil Randall for 15. Leaving Thatcham in a spot of bother at 42-2. However Duncan Johnson (77) and Ali Naqvi (110) played superbly, seeing off the new ball and then punishing some loose bowling from Cove. They were parted after a superb partnership of 146 when Johnson was bowled by Sinha, leaving him short of a deserved hundred. Naqvi however continued in the same vein and punched the air after scoring back to back hundreds. Wickets fell regularly as Thatcham chased quick runs in search of a declaration with Matt Denness steering Thatcham to 251 for 6 from 50 overs.

It was an imposing target and Cove appeared to go after it, with both Marsh and Schofield scoring quickly. Thatcham bowled a loose opening 10 overs with Andy Harland in particular struggling for line. However Naqvi made the break through bowling marsh for 19 and Schofield quickly followed leaving Cove 48-2. Chris Bird bowled a superb tight spell claiming the wicket of the Marsh Jnr, however this was really the turning point with Neil Randall struggling to score it appears Cove took the decision not to go for the win. Thatcham introduced Duncan Johnson, who got turn and bounce grabbing the wicket of Howells for just 10. Cove reduced to 110-4 with just 15 overs remaining. With Cove just playing for survival the bowling was changed regularly and Nick Bishop claimed two wickets in an over including that of the main stay Neil Randall (56). Unfortunately James Ettridge was the only other ‘bowler’ to claim a wicket, with possibly the worst delivery down the leg side ever seen at the Brownsfield, with Dan Stone claiming a smart catch off the bottom edge. Although a tense finish Cove managed to see out their 50 overs making just 136-7.

The lads came off pretty down beat having played Cove off the park it was frustrating not to get full reward. However for once the results went in over favour with Bagshot not completing their game, Thatcham leap frogged them to return to the top of the table by just two points and Harefield and Amersham close behind in 3rd and 4th place.

The next three games really are crucial to our season with the top of the table clash with Bagshot next week and then Amersham and Harefield the following weeks!
