Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI continued their good start to the season with a convincing 143 run win over bottom of the table Bagshot 4’s on Saturday.

Put into bat on a slow damp pitch with variable bounce the experienced opening pair of Paul Roberts and Micky Stone showed just how to bat in these conditions getting Thatcham away to a perfect start, bringing up the 100 partnership in the 21st over. Roberts was the first to go, holing out in the deep for a patient 42.

Micky Stone was then joined by Neil Stevenson and these two kept the momentum going against an increasingly deflated Bagshot attack, taking the score to 176 before Stone was finally bowled for a fine 78. Stevenson and youngster Ollie Roberts took advantage of the tiring bowlers with some fine attacking shots and although both were dismissed before the end it enabled the declaration to come with the score on 229 for 5. Neil Stevenson making a fine 50 and Ollie Roberts 23.

Colt H Bartlett was the pick to the Bagshot bowlers, particularly unlucky to finish wicketless in his 10 overs for 32.

In truth the home side never really got going on what was a difficult wicket to score freely on and all five Thatcham bowlers picked up wickets as Bagshot were dismissed for 86.

Simon Chapple marked his first league game the season with a 10 over spell, beating the bat with monotonous regularity and unlucky to finish with only 1 for 23. Youngsters Mattie Taylor and Rob Clare also bowled particularly well, Taylor taking the first two wickets to fall for impressive figures of 2 for 16 and Clare finishing with 1 for 12 from his five overs.

Of the Bagshot batsmen only opener Rawlinson showed the application necessary in the conditions, and he was smartly run out by the colt combination of Ollie Roberts and Adrian Bromhead for 17 – the only Bagshot bat to make double figures.

A valuable 25 point win taking Thatcham up to 4th in Division 7A and with a game in hand on the top three.
