Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v FLEET 3 on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 94 runs

Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI notched up another 25 point win on Saturday with a comfortable 94 run victory over Fleet 3rd XI.

Winning the toss and following much deliberation the Fleet skipper decided to put Thatcham in to bat on a damp Henwick wicket. However he immediately regretted his decision as Kieran Lynch and stand in opener Andy Stephenson, put on a 98 run partnership from the first 14 overs. With Lynch hitting powerfully down the ground and Stephenson dispatching anything short of a length the Fleet bowlers were unable to find any sort of rhythm.

The introduction of the slower bowlers eventually brought the breakthrough and with Stephenson bowled for 51 and Lynch dismissed shortly afterwards for 47, Fleet were able to slow the scoring rate. Neil Stevenson and youngster Carl Self had to work hard to get the ball away on the slow wicket but Self in particular soon found his form with some glorious sweep shots. Stevenson was well caught on the boundary for 16 but Self continued before being bowled for a fine 39. Some work was still required to reach 200 and maximum batting points but Messrs Wells, Wimbush and Stephenson (jnr) did the business – Thatcham being finally dismissed for 207 in the 44th over.

For Fleet S Aberdeen worked hard and was unlucky to finish with only 3 for 71 from his 13 overs, but K Dulake had the best figures as he mopped up the tail to finish with 3 for 8 from only 3 overs.

With the conditions favouring the slower bowlers Thatcham opened the attack with the experienced spin duo of Tony Wimbush and Dave Wells, and although 13 runs came form the first 2 overs, the runs soon dried up as the these two, backed up by top quality fielding, started to apply the pressure.

Following 4 consecutive maidens Wimbush made the breakthrough having opener Bywater well caught by youngster Mattie Taylor with the score on 22 in the 9th over. With Wimbush tying up one end Thatcham were able to turn to a seam attack at the other and Taylor with 2 for 7 from 5 overs and Eddie Wylie with 3 for 23 took care of the lower order.

Tony Wimbush accounted for the Fleet top order however, in a fine spell of 14 overs to take 3 for 34. The fielding was superb throughout with Carl Self making his customary direct-hit run out, and with top quality catching to back up the bowlers, this was a good all round performance by the 4th XI and a vital 25 points in a weekend disrupted by rain.
