Match report Following a week of steady rain at Cove the home skipper wasted no time in putting Thatcham 4’s into bat on a damp and grassy wicket.

Batting indeed proved hard work with runs difficult to come by against the accurate bowling of M Carter and J Sharrod. However Thatcham openers Mick Stone and Adrian Bromhead worked hard against the moving ball and had seen off the opening attack before Bromhead was dismissed to a tremendous catch by the bowler for a gritty 14. Nic Monger then joined Micky Stone and these two then put together the partnership of the game taking the score from 44 for 1 after 19 overs to 122 before Monger was dismissed for a fine 36 in the 34th over.

With Thatcham trying to push on to 200 wickets tumbled and Thatcham slumped to 128 for 5. Dave Wells stemmed the slide temporarily taking the score to 161 before another flurry of wickets saw Thatcham reduced to 165 for 9. Dan Stephenson chipped in at the end but Thatcham were finally dismissed for 174. Micky Stone yet again the mainstay of the innings with a superb 85.

Youngster M Carter with 4 for 11 and J Sharrod with 5 for 20 from 18 overs bowled superbly and were the most successful Cove bowlers.

Cove lost a couple of early wickets but a stand of 50 between D Oliver and Jamie Sharrod threatened to take the game away from Thatcham. However Oliver was forced to retire hurt suffering from cramp and Thatcham were able to take advantage with new batsmen at the crease, reducing Cove to 86 for 7. They could not finish the job however and benefiting from a series of missed chances Sharrod and M Bullock took the attack to the bowlers to take the score to 144. With the target almost within their grasp Cove took a couple of chances too many and both were dismissed in quick succession and with Adrian Bromhead stumping last man Tickner the game was finally won – Thatcham victorious by 23 runs.

Matt Taylor with 1 for 8 from 5 overs bowled very well early on, Dave Wells chipped in with 2 for 33, Andy Stephenson claimed 3 for 28, but the pick of the bowlers was Nic Monger who bowled superbly to take 3 for 40 from 12.1 overs.
