Match report Thatcham travelled to Enborne Lodge for the final pre-season friendly and a disappointing performance saw them go down by 37 runs against their local rivals. Falkland batted first and skipper Bruce Martin and ex-Thatcham stalwart James Ettridge opened up with a century partnership that basically laid the foundations for the home side to win the game. Batting wasn't easy but both Martin and Ettridge survived a dropped catch and a missed run out to make the most of the chances given to them by the visitors. Martin made a hard hit 60 and Ettridge 43 before the breakthrough came. 100-0 became 171 all out, proving had the chances on offer been taken then maybe 120 would have been easier to chase. John Williams took 4-32 from his 9 overs on his birthday and Callum Johnson took 3-23 in 8.1 overs, blasting the tail away, which augers well for the season ahead. Chris Bird was the other wicket taker with 1-33 from his 9 overs.
Thatcham never really got going against some excellent bowling from the Falkland seamers. Only Josh Winfield really took the attack to the home side with a hard hit 35, but from 57-6 the visitors never looked like threatening the target. A wagging tail, Gibson 12 and Bird 18 ensured that the end total was at least respectful but it was a poor day at the office. Rehan Akram bowled beautifully for Falkland, returning 5-19 from his 9 overs and he was well supported by Nigel Trumper 1-16 from 9 and Bruce Martin 2-24 from 9 as the home side recorded a comfortable victory.
Thatcham will need to be far sharper in all disciplines of the game when the TVL season kicks off at Bagshot next weekend.
