Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 139 runs

Match report Thatcham returned to winning ways with an emphatic 139 run victory over basement side Fleet to close the gap on leaders Royal Ascot and maintain their promotion push from Thames Valley 3A.
Batting first, Thatcham struggled to impose themselves on the Fleet attack but a patient 67 from the in-form Josh O’Flynn and useful contributions from both Tom Mahoney (25) and Jack Young (28) saw the home side comfortably placed on 110 for 3 and well set for a commanding total.
But just as Thatcham looked to accelerate the innings, a familiar collapse brought Fleet back into the game and at 158 for 8, Thatcham looked to have missed the opportunity to take complete control.
A further 14 was added for the 9th wicket, but it was the final pair of Stephen Bird and Scott Gibson (14 not out) that set about restoring Thatcham’s dominant position as they batted superbly to grab back the initiative from a now tiring Fleet attack. Bird (30 not out) was particularly impressive as their 32 run partnership hauled Thatcham past 200, and with maximum batting points assured, stand in skipper Chris Bird declared the innings at the 50 over mark with a healthy 204-9 on the board.
Searching for early wickets, Thatcham opened with spinners Chris Bird and John Williams and with both finding considerable turn and bounce the Fleet response was soon in trouble. Bird quickly accounted for openers Gurney and Bywaters and with little resistance to follow, Thatcham eased towards victory. A sharp slip catch from Tom Mahoney saw Proctor depart for 13 and with only two other Fleet batsman reaching double figures, Thatcham’s total was never threatened.
Williams (4 for 23 from 14.1) showed superb control in his impressive spell but it was Bird (6-40) that grabbed the plaudits as the spin duo bowled unchanged to dismiss Fleet for just 65 and secure a maximum 25 point haul.
With just three games remaining, Thatcham remain in second spot and with a final day showdown with third placed Aldershot looming, they’ll look for a repeat performance against lowly Wokingham 2’s next week.
