Match report Thatcham II’s bowlers were let down by a dismal fielding and batting display as they suffered a heavy defeat away to Henley II.

Garth Masters and Gary Waterston bowled decent opening spells but couldn’t make a breakthrough which eventually came about with the introduction of veteran swinger Tim Mahoney, Hussain caught for 41. Smith came and went, deceived by John Williams but Davison (50) and A White (45) made the most of the generosity of Thatcham’s fielders and a middle order flourish in difficult bowling conditions meant Henley reached 219-6 in 52 overs, at least thirty more than they should have scored.

Mahoney, 1-38 from 16, and Williams, 2-54 from 14 both bowled very well and suffered most at the (lack of) hands of the fielders.

Rain added some life to the wicket and a good new ball spell from A White (2-29) and Chamberlain meant a slow start with Matt Denness first to go for 10. Iain Cottingham and Chris Brown started to play more confidently and got the rate moving up towards 3 an over when Cotty (19) nicked one to slip. Brown looked solid for 21 but when he went Thatcham fell apart and only some lusty hitting from Masters (26) took them past 100.

D White claimed 5-50 and Hussain 3-6 as the Thatcham batters, admittedly in the face of some good bowling, allowed the Henley bowlers to dominate and much improvement is needed if they are to challenge for honours this season.
