Match report A much improved all round performance saw Thatcham 4th XI register their first win of the season and to claim a much needed 25 points.

After electing to bat first Thatcham looked to openers Paul Sharp and Adrian Bromhead to get the innings off to an ideal start, which they did with a fine 60 run opening partnership. The good work was continued by youngster Adam Phillips who once again batted with great maturity leaving Thatcham well placed as they passed the 100 mark for the loss of only 3 wickets.

However two quick wickets put Bracknell back in the game, but for the first time this year the lower order batted with much more resolution and were able to push up the scoring rate as a further 100 runs were added before the declaration at 202 for 9 after 50 overs. Paul Sharp and Andy Stephenson were the top scorers with 35 apiece, supported by a fine 24 from Adam Phillips and a quick fire 23 from Gavin Ansell.

Brett Martindale, who bowled unchanged throughout the innings, was the pick of the Bracknell bowling, taking 5 for 61 from his 25 overs.

Bracknell in reply started steadily, with opener Ram looking very secure, and Thatcham had to work hard to make inroads, but wickets did come as first Ansell and then Ben Cruise started to find the edges. From 50 for 5 however, the Bracknell lower order made a real fight of it as D Ford and Martindale started to put bat to ball, and more importantly use up the precious overs.

It took a peach of a delivery from Neil Stevenson to remove the Bracknell skipper Martindale, but that brought Vaughan to the crease who surprised his teammates with a fine 32, almost taking the game out of Thatcham’s reach. However when he was bowled by Matt Taylor the resistance was finally over and the last two wickets fell in quick succession. Thatcham winning by 77 runs with 3 overs remaining.

Of the Thatcham bowlers Matt Taylor with 3 for 5 from 6.1 overs was the most successful, ably supported by Ben Cruise with 3 for 40 from his 15 overs, and Adrian Bromhead behind the stumps who claimed 3 catches and a stumping.
