Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Marlow on Sat 28 Aug 2004 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham’s slim chances of promotion finally went as they could only draw at home to Marlow on Saturday, although North Maidenhead’s victory against Cove wrapped up the title for them anyway.

Marlow elected to bat but lost Shaw in the first over as Bradman Ediriweera bowled Shaw for 0. Powell looked threatening but his attacking nature meant chances were offered but not taken. The first he gave was a difficult one low to mid off off Ediriweera and soon after an easier one went begging at point off the luckless Peter Edgcombe and both of these were before he had reached 20.

James replaced Ediriweera and he had Wrighton dropped in his third over, although this didn’t cost too much as he was caught in his next over at cover for 34. The run rate was up at four an over at this stage and Marlow looked well set for a total well in excess of 200.

Powell reached his half century and then gave a third chance which again was missed at mid off. At 145-2 from 35 overs Thatcham were in some trouble but Chris Bird and Ediriweera turned things their way. Bird took the vital wicket of Powell who was finally caught by Harland for 74. In the next over Thatcham’s Sri Lankan bowled Hodson for 19 and then trapped Thomas lbw for 5 and three wickets had fallen for five runs. Ediriweera bowled a five over spell of 2-13 at a vital time to finish with 3-36 from 12 overs.

Baig and Madurasinghe added 25 before they fell in successive balls to Bird and with Theunissen returning to bowl a very tight spell Marlow couldn’t get the sort of score they would have expected. Bird picked up his fourth wicket as Rochester, who could barely lay a bat on him, finally did but gave a catch to Edgcombe. Theunissen finished with 1-46 and the final over saw Bird collect a well deserved fifth wicket as he bowled De Franco to finish with 5-34 from 12 overs, a fine performance considering they were all bowled at the end of the innings.

188 was a very gettable target but Thatcham were put onto the back foot as Ediriweera was given out lbw for just 9. Jim Ettridge followed soon after, bowled by a beauty for 8 to leave Thatcham 18-2 after 8 overs.

Steve Wyatt and Andy Harland added thirty but some tight bowling from Thomas and Powell saw four maidens on the trot and the pressure told as Harland was bowled for 7. The first of several questionable umpiring decisions then accounted for Wyatt as he was given caught at short leg. The standing umpire was unsighted and asked his colleague at square leg who gave him out when the vast majority in the ground clearly saw the ball bounce as the fielder tried to take the ball at the second attempt. Whilst the decision was disappointing the fact that the fielder claimed was even worse.

Chris Wright was bowled by Thomas by one that kept a little low and then Robb Fraser was given lbw for 0 when the ball hit him high on the thigh pad. That left Thatcham on 72-6 with 17 overs remaining. Billy Beaumont, who’s struggled for form all season, now played the anchor role superbly, picking off singles while Theunissen played in his inimitable way, crashing three fours and a six in his twenty to give the innings some impetus.

Nick Bishop then joined Beaumont with 80 needed from ten overs, and the pair used all of their experience to take the game to the visitors. Beaumont produced a couple of vintage cover drives but it was Bishop who was the main aggressor with a six over extra cover a highlight of his innings.

They managed to get to 18 needed off two overs and when Bishop despatched Baig for a straight six Thatcham sensed they might actually win the game. With eleven needed from seven balls Bishop was looking to keep the strike but a direct hit saw him given out for 45 with the umpire in no position to confidently make such a tight decision.

Chris Bird came in and he and Beaumont could only get two singles from the first four balls of the final over bowled by Thomas and all hope seemed lost. However, Bird then played a magnificent shot over midwicket for six to leave three required from the last ball but Thomas held his nerve and couldn’t get the ball away. Beaumont was run out for 38 as he’d backed up so far and Thatcham finished agonisingly short.
