Match report Thatcham 2nd X1 against Burnham 2nd X1 Saturday 22nd May 2004 at Brownsfield Thatcham,

Having lost a quick wicket to Nicky Voller right at the start, Burnham took the game to Thatcham with a scintillating batting display from S. Ullah, who took apart the opening bowling attack of Voller and Jamie Bishop. A flat batting track gave him the confidence to play all of his shots, and there didn’t seem to one that he couldn’t play! Ably supported by Stefan Hothi (51) and A Khan (58), the Burnham score looked set to finish somewhere in the 300’s before skipper Tim Mahoney put the brakes on with a great spell of 10 overs for just 17 runs. Ullah was eventually claimed by Voller for a total of 81, Bishop and Voller then closing up the bowling claiming 3 and 2 wickets respectively with a cameo bowl from Danny Stone, taking a wicket from his 4 overs at the end of the innings. Burnham finished their innings with 273 for 6 wickets from 50 overs, considerably less than would have been amassed had Ullah remained at the crease.

Thatcham’s batting reply took a big dent at the start with Billy Beaumont being dismissed without score. The track had looked ideally suited to Beaumont’s correct batting technique, but the opening spin bowlers for Burnham managed to extract more from the wicket than Thatcham had all innings. Danny Stone joined Livingstone Smith at the crease and moved the score along until a dreadful running mix up left Cameron Smith stranded, run out on 11. Thatcham were never in control of their innings, with Burnham looking set to take wickets at regular intervals. Watts and Redmond pushed the score along with 13 and 16 each, before Nick Bishop came in and started playing the shots that the wicket warranted. A quick 29 from him and a further 24 from Stephen Bird left Thatcham chasing for an extra batting point at 175. Burnham mixed up the bowling in an attempt to wipe out the tail enders but Thatcham finished with Bird and Voller batting on a total of 166 for 8 wickets.

Moral victory and lion’s share of the points for Burnham, 14 to Thatcham’s 6.
