Match report Thatcham produced a much-improved performance to defeat bottom of the table Cove 2 on Saturday in what has been an inconsistent season so far. Cove won the toss and chose to bat but it was Thatcham who drew first blood when the lively Gary Hadfield had opener Reagan caught behind off his first over. Cove rallied however and with a lightening quick outfield scored at 4 an over for the first 10 overs. The introduction of Tim Mahoney and Perry Moore put the brakes on the scoring and from being 59 for 1 Cove slumped to 88 for 6 from 31 overs. Sensible batting from the Cove lower order enabled them to reach a flattering total of 203 from their 52 overs. Moore 5-60 from 20 unchanged overs was the pick of the Thatcham bowlers and he received good support from Mahoney 2-49 from 16 overs.

Thatcham’s batting has been their Achilles heel over the past few weeks but with the promotion of Ian DeMelvin from the 3rds to open the innings Thatcham got off to a good start. With DeMelvin playing the anchor role, this allowed the stylish Cameron Livingstone-Smith to play some free flowing shots and eased their way to 78 before Livingstone-Smith was adjudged LBW for an excellent 52 from 63 balls. Dan Stone joined DeMelvin at the crease and they took the score onto 106 when DeMelvin was bowled for a hard-grafted 29. Youngster Paul Jenkins the joined Stone and together they accelerated the rate playing shots all around the wicket. The re-introduction of opening bowler Smith saw the downfall of Jenkins for an excellent 31 with the score on 166 in the 41st over. Stone was unfazed however and he continued the onslaught along with Simon Hood they took the score onto 188 when Hood was dismissed. Skipper Jamie Fisher joined Stone and when Stone was bowled by a slow “long-hop”
For a superb 65 it was left to Fisher to hit 3 consecutive fours to win the game with 2.2 overs to spare and secure a welcome 20 points.
