Purley v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 06 Jun 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 103 runs

Match report An under strength Thatcham second team lost heavily away to Purley in the Border League on Sunday. The home side were sent into bat and were quickly scoring at seven an over. Thatcham’s cause wasn’t helped as Robb Fraser had to come out of the attack after only one over with a shoulder injury.

Reber was particularly harsh on anything that gave him room outside his off stump, hitting several boundaries. Tony Glinos eventually made the breakthrough, bowling Allen for 23, but the run rate continued to rise.

A change in bowling saw two wickets fall in one over as Gavin Ansell dismissed Denton for 19 and then Nash lbw first ball. This brought Brown to the wicket and he sensibly fed Reber the strike as he moved towards his century.

Thatcham did manage to slow the run rate thanks to some excellent bowling from the two youngest members of the side. Twelve year old Daniel Stephenson and thirteen year old Liam Dillon both showed real promise and were unlucky not to pick up a wicket.

Reber reached his century with a trademark cover drive but fell soon after to Steve Bartholomew for 108 and the innings closed on 243-5 when Liam Redmond got rid of Brown for 52.

With an inexperienced line up Thatcham needed a Matthew Denness to bat well and he looked in good form from the off. Bartholomew struck a couple of nice fours before miscuing to mid off for 10.

Denness continued to dominate the bowling and dealt mainly in boundaries and he found solid support from Ian Demelvin (17). The score had moved to 76 in the 15th over when Denness mishit a cut shot straight to point and he was gone for 45 with 9 fours.

Runs then dried up as the spinners Nash and Brown came on, with the former keeping things particularly tight. Demelvin hit Brown for six but was stumped soon afterwards trying to repeat the shot and Glinos soon followed, bowled by Nash for 10.

The wickets continued to tumble as Redmond was bowled by Brown for 1 and Thatcham reached the halfway point at 99-5. Fraser and Andy Stephenson threatened briefly but when the former went for 24 Thatcham’s slim chance of victory was gone. Ansell scored a quick 16 before he became Brown’s fourth wicket and the last rites were issued when Cruise ran himself out for 0 with Thatcham all out for 140.
