Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Tring Park II on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 71 runs

Match report The relentless Thatcham juggernault rolled on for a 6th win on the bounce on Saturday at Brownfield as Tring Park 2’s were brushed aside to give the leaders a maximum 25 point haul and open up a 20 point gap at the top of the TVL1 table.

Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won another toss and instead of playing it safe, he gambled and decided to bat first, confident that he had the weapons in his bowling attack to dismiss Tring.

After 14 overs however, Johnson was shaking his head as Ali Naqvi (10), Steve Wyatt (6), James Ettridge (0) and Johnson himself (11) were all back in the pavilion with just 53 on the board as Tring skipper Kempster and Chaplin destroyed the top order with some quality seam bowling. It took a wonderful partnership of 98 runs between Daniel Stone and Matthew Denness to turn the tide as the pair dug in and rebuilt the innings in superb style. Stone was his usual fluent self, driving through the covers with authority and the dogged Denness was revelling in his role and batted as if his life depended on it. They took the score to 149 before Stone cut loosely to Criddle at point and departed for a fine 61. Paul Jenkins (2) came and went, caught at the wicket by Cox to give Kempster his 5th wicket and the Tring skipper wasn’t finished there as Denness finally succumbed for 29, again caught at the wicket by keeper Cox. Thatcham were 156-7 from 40 overs and now it was left to youngsters Nick Monger and Jamie Young to keep the momentum going and push their side up to the 200 mark. Young in particular showed no fear, unleashing some brutal strokes including a big six of Chaplin over deep midwicket and with Monger playing sensibly and rotating the strike the pair added the 44 runs needed to reach 200 in the 50th over. This was enough for Johnson as he declared leaving Young unbeaten on 33 and Monger 12 at the close of the innings.
Tring skipper Kempster bowled superbly to claim 6-41 from 13 overs for his side, but lacked the necessary support to really put the leaders under pressure.

With 50 overs to dismiss the bottom side, who were only fielding 10 men, it was vital Thatcham got off to a good start and it was Ali Naqvi who struck with his 2nd ball, Halsall guiding a ball straight to a grateful James Ettridge at 2nd slip for 0. Chaplin was next to go as he edged Navqi to Stone behind the sticks for 11 and when Aris (12) tried to pull Naqvi square, he only succeeded in top edging it up into the air and Chris Bird scrambled round from short leg to take a fine catch and leave Tring in trouble at 37-3 from 10 overs.
A brief partnership then took place between Bushe and Plumeridge as they added 31 runs and both looked comfortable until a mix up saw Bushe go for a 2nd run to Nick Monger at deep square only for Plumeridge to send him back, but he was stranded half way down the track as the throw came into Johnson who had the simple task of removing the bails and Bushe departed for 20. Naqvi then cleaned up Smith for 0 before another partnership between Criddle and Plumeridge threatened to turn the game, but the introduction of Nick Bishop proved fatal for Tring as he showed all his experience and variation and tempted Criddle to hit straight to Johnson at mid off for 17, the Thatcham skipper making no mistake with the catch. Kempster couldn’t continue his heroics as he was bowled by a beauty from Bishop for 0 and the end was in sight. Plumeridge was still there however and he reached a fine 50 before he tried to hit Johnson against the spin and the ball skied up high and Johnson took a fine running catch to end his stay. It was left to Nick Bishop to finish the job, Boniface offering no resistance as he hit to Denness at mid on without scoring and Tring were all out for 129 in the 37th over.
Ali Naqvi, 15 overs 4-34 and Nick Bishop 3-11 from 4.2 overs were the pick of the home attack with Johnson 1-28 from 8 overs the other wicket taker.

It was a fantastic win for a Thatcham side who are absolutely on top of their game at the moment and they gained another 5 points on their closest rivals Amersham and Harefield who both played it safe and had comfortable wins chasing low totals to get 20 points each.

Thatcham travel to High Wycombe 2’s next week, but again Johnson will have to shuffle the pack as James Ettridge, Nick Bishop, Daniel Stone and Daniel Stephenson are all unavailable
