Match report Cricket returned to Brownsfield a week later than scheduled this weekend on a overcast Saturday afternoon as Thatcham beat Sulhampstead by 7 wickets in a pre-season friendly.

A new look Thatcham side won the toss, electing to field first and looked to put their new positive approach on the opposition on a pitch tricky for batting. Green (1-9) and Moore (0-26) got straight into their work as they made scoring hard for the visiting openers, who after riding their luck managed to get through the first 10 overs unscathed. The introduction of Mackay into the attack brought immediate reward as he has Walden caught smartly by Wheeler for the Trouts first wicket of the season. Green then followed this up the very next over claiming the wicket of Walden’s opening partner, Belcher, putting Thatcham on top at 36-2. Thompson and Burrows then put on 37 for the hosts, with the former being particularly pleasing on the eye and timing the ball nicely on a tricky pitch. Denton-Powell then got into his work to remove Burrows and Davidson in quick succession and with a run out added on top of this, Thatcham were well in the ascendancy, with Sulhampstead 95/5. From that point onwards it was once again the Chris Bird show as the Janitor mopped things up for Thatcham, claiming his first 5 wicket haul of the season and returning figures of 5-29 from his 7.2 overs. Thompson (71) provided the only real resistance for Sulhampstead, with only 2 other batters making double figures. Sulhampstead finished on 148, helped considerably by Thatcham’s extras.

Thatcham were aware this would be a tricky chase on a pitch which was offering plenty, but openers Klichowicz (58) and Young were keen to show their intent and bought in to the Trouts new positive approach. Klichowicz in particular looked classy early on, punishing anything over pitched. Young, a bit more scratchy as the pair but on 47 for the first wicket before MacDonald ripped the glove of Young who had to go for 18. Brown helped push the score along with Klichowicz who in pulling a short ball to the boundary passed his 50, as the pair put on a further 48 runs. Both fell in quick succession, leaving a further 45 runs still to get and in previous years this would have been a nervy finish for the hosts. But Wheeler (25) and Bartholomew (20) navigated this period with ease and took Thatcham to victory.

A promising start for the new look side, with great intensity with bat, ball and in the field and still plenty to work on. Beating a side 2 divisions above them is no mean feat and the Trouts host another higher division side, Kidmore End, at home next week looking to build on this positive start to the season.
