Finchampstead 3 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 27 May 2023 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 1

Match report Thatcham bounced back from last week’s disappointment with a convincing 6 wicket win against Finchampstead.

Having lost the toss, Thatcham were asked to field in the heat and immediately it looked like a good day for batting. The ever reliable Moore took the new ball with the impressive Thorne (2-39) and the pair looked to keep it tight early on. Thorne got an early breakthrough as he trapped the Finchampstead opener on the pads in his third over. A partnership of 74 in quick time between Rose and Fearon put Thatcham on the back foot but the introduction of spin twins Bird (1-30) & Brown (2-25) dragged Thatcham back into the contest. Bird had Fearon caught by Bartholomew then Brown had Rose bowled the very next over to change the score from 88-1 to 90-3. The run rate slowed drastically as the pair dried the runs up before Roberts tried breaking the shackles unsuccessfully as he was caught by Young for Brown’s second victim. Wheeler then joined the attack and continued to put pressure on the Finch batters. He found the edge of the Finch batter who was well caught by Young and then struck again soon after as Bartholomew took his second catch of the afternoon. Two further quick wickets fell as the returning Thorne got his second wicket and a brilliant run out from Denton-Powell meant Finch had gone from 88-1 to 154-8. Simmons (47*), had been watching the carnage unfold the other end frustrated Thatcham’s pursuit for the final 2 wickets and found able support from Harper (14*). The pair batted out the final 10 overs safely and got Finch up to 202-8 after their 45 overs.

On a good batting track, Thatcham were happy with their efforts and the Trouts started positively with the bat. In form Klichowicz struck a couple of early boundaries as he and Wheeler settle into the chase. The spin of Harper got the wicket of Klichowicz for 13 but Brown and Wheeler showed their class with a partnership of 65. Brown was busy in between the wickets and bounced on anything loose whilst Wheeler showed his dominance. The pair were looking extremely comfortable and it was a surprise when Wheeler was bowled for 39 on the stroke of drinks. Young joined Brown and the pair continued to push the score along with ease before a mix up meant Brown was ran out for 48, 2 short of a well deserved half century. Denton-Powell joined Young and immediately showed his intent, lofting a cover drive for 4 from his second ball. The pair looked to be cruising to victory but when Young was bowled for 28, Finch felt they were still in the game. Bartholomew and Denton-Powell took the game away from Finch as the later hit a dominant 42* to see Thatcham to victory inside the 43rd over.

A dominant performance from Thatcham who will look to make it back to back wins at home to Purley on Saturday.
