Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Reading on Sat 22 May 2021 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 49 runs (D/L)

Match report Thatcham were beaten by Reading at Brownsfield on Saturday as they fell to a 49 run defeat.

Having won the toss Thatcham put Reading into bat and looked to make good use of a bowler friendly pitch. Returning from injury, Gilmour (1-17) got straight into his work as he dismissed Chima for 0. He was backed up by the impressive Thorne, who deserved more reward for his spell. The visitors however, battled out the tough opening period and were helped by some poor Thatcham fielding. Jheeta passed a well made 50 before the introduction of Green (1-25) had Jheeta caught by O’Flynn. Thatcham then got on top as debutant Moore picked up his first wicket in the middle of his impressive spell. Moore combined with the ever reliable old timer Bird (4-18), reduced the visitors from 83-1 to 150-7. Two late run outs from Young meant the visitors could never build any momentum as they finished their innings on 158-9 from their allotted 41 overs. This score was boosted to 163 after DLS was applied.

Thatcham new they would have to bat very well to chase down the total and required a good start against an impressive Reading bowling attack. However, just the opposite happened as they lost both openers cheaply as they slumpt to 8-2. This was made worse when the reliable Spriggs was bowled with the score only on 13. It was up to the captain, Young and Rochfort to rebuild the innings. The pair looked to be busy at the crease and Rochfort was pouncing on anything loose, before he played on shot too many and was out for 17. Gilmour looked to counter attack and combined with Young they moved the score up to 82 and were back in the game. With Reading’s main bowlers seen off, it was time for the Thatcham pair to be positive and look to chase down the total. However, a freak moment which saw Gilmour smash the ball back to the bowler who could only get a finger to the ball before the ball went onto the stumps. Young, short of his ground was therefore run out and Reading were back in the ascendancy. The game seemed to slip away from Thatcham after that point as Gilmour was bowled 2 overs later and the tail struggled on a pitch which was tough to score runs on. Thatcham were bowled out in the 38th over for 113.

A tough day for Thatcham against a Reading side who went unbeaten last season. There were still positives to take from the game including Moore’s debut performance and the return of Gilmour. Thatcham go to Bagshot next Saturday as they look to record their first win of the season.
