Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Boyne Hill 2 on Sat 13 May 2023 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 6 Wickets

Match report Thatcham got their league campaign off to a winning start following last weeks washout, with a convincing 6 wicket victory over Boyne Hill.

After winning the toss, Thatcham skipper Young had no hesitation in inserting the visitors in overcast conditions. The decision paid immediate rewards as the debutant Reeves (2-35) found the edge of Mellor who was well caught by Young in the slips. Reeves’ opening partner, Moore (2-27), soon joined him in the wickets column as he produced a beauty to bowl the Boyne Hull number 3, leaving Boyne Hill 15-2. The hosts kept searching for wickets after a good start and the introduction of Wheeler (1-24) and Bird (2-38) provided just that as the visitors slipped to 66-6. Brown (1-32) bowled with good control during the middle of the innings but the Boyne Hill batters showed some fight, just when Thatcham thought they would bowl the visitors out cheaply. A combination of rebuilding from the middle order and some big hitting from the lower order saw Boyne Hill get up to 187-9. A good fightback from Boyne Hill but Thatcham still felt this was well under par on a good pitch. An excellent all round bowling display, with new boy Reeves and the reliable Moore the pick of the Thatcham attack.

The hosts got off to a flyer in their response to Boyne Hill’s 187. The aggressive Jack Young and fluent Klichowicz combined beautifully and Boyne Hill could not cope with the positive yet controlled approach. The pair but on 68 in the first 10 overs before Young player round a straight one and was bowled for 46 off just 35 balls. Brown joined Klichowicz in the middle and the pair continued to be aggressive and looked to score at every opportunity. Brown in particular looking good on the eye with some delightful cover drives. Spin was introduced into the attack and Klichowicz went on the attack pulling a couple of towering sixes into the next field, before he was bowled by Heyes for 47. Brown (23) soon followed and with two new batters at the crease Boyne Hill had an outside chance at 130-3. Wheeler put any chance of a Boyne hill comeback to bed as he struck a quickfire 21 before being stumped, which left Bartholomew and Jamie Young to see the hosts home with 15 overs to spare.

A great start to the league season for the trouts and they will look to back that up against Reading at Brownsfield on Saturday.
