Match report Thatcham were crowned champions on Saturday after a comfortable win at home to Cove.

Batting first, Wheeler and Klichowicz opened up for the hosts and immediately looked to put the pressure on the Cove bowling line up, with Klichowicz hitting a towering six to move the score past 30 before he was bowled for 16. Wheeler and the ever reliable Brown looked to build a partnership. Things had just started to move along nicely before a rain delay saw a delay of just over 30 minutes, which would reduce Cove’s innings and therefore make a potentially easier chase. Having known this, Wheeler and Brown put there foots down and looked to get on with things. Wheeler past 50 and was looking in great touch and Brown looked sure to follow him to the landmark before a beauty from the Cove spinner brought an end to his innings for 43. The returning Spriggs batted at 4 and after a couple of early plays and misses he got into his work with a strong lofted drive straight down the ground for 4. Wheeler continued on his merry way but unfortunately fell short of a deserved hundred as he departed for 84. The very next ball Young was dismissed, bowled round his legs and Spriggs followed soon after. Thatcham’s score currently on 194-5, needed a couple of overs to rebuild after losing 3 quick wickets. The Ginger Lara and Rochfort did this beautifully as they absorbed a couple of overs before looking to move the score on further. The pair put on 49 before the Ginger Lara was dismissed going for late runs, but not before 2 huge sixes. Rochfort continued to score quickly, bringing out the scoop on a few occasions as he reached 50 with the penultimate ball of the innings. The final score finishing on 269-7 from 45 overs but with the rain delays this was reduced to 216 from 36 overs for Cove to take victory and spoil Thatcham’s promotion party for this week.

In truth, the Cove innings never got going. Green charged in with the new ball, determined to bowl his side to victory. He struck in his second over, finding the edge of the Cove opener. Spriggs then produced a fine bit of fielding for a run out the next over and Cove were 13-2. An early introduction for Brown into the attack reaped immediate rewards as he claimed a wicket in his first over. That proved to be the only bowling change in the innings as Brown and Green ran through the Cove batting order. The pair’s figures showing just how well they bowled, with Green returning figures of 7.2 overs 3-13 and Brown 4 overs 4-5. A real fine display with bat and ball showed just how dominant a day and season it has been for Thatcham.

A great effort from all the lads to bounce back this season and the Trouts haven’t lost since Cove beat them 9 games ago. With the league title secured, Thatcham can go into the final game of the season away at Newbury with full confidence as they look to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games.
