Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v Challow on Sun 14 Aug 2005 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 119 runs
Match report
Thatcham entertained Challow & Childrey on Sunday afternoon in the Border Sunday League, and came away with a crushing 119 run victory. Skipper Edgcombe won the toss and elected to bat. Bradman Ediriweera and Paul Jenkins opened the innings, and with the Challow opening bowlers getting considerable bounce and movement off the wicket, they survived a few early scares before starting to impose their authority. They put on 99 in only 15 overs before Jenkins was bowled for 46, by a good yorker from Dimbylow. Chris Bird, on his 40th birthday, joined Ediriweera and put on 23 before Ediriweera was out caught for 47. Bird followed 10 runs later, with Dimbylow again the tormentor, inducing a snick behind. Martin Keep and Mike Hayes then put on 32, including a huge six over midwicket from Keep, before Keep was bowled for 18. Hayes followed shortly afterwards, which brought Edgcombe and Bartholomew together. The pair put on 28 before Edgcombe steered a low catch to gully. Bartholomew holed out 4 runs later for 19, which brought Gavin Ansell to the wicket to join John Williams, with the latter playing a couple of excellent cover drives, before he too holed out for 14. Ben Cruise was out on the same score and it was left to Kevin Liversedge and Ansell to try and steer Thatcham through the remaining overs. After a couple of lusty blows, Ansell was bowled for 10, leaving Thatcham all out for 220 in 40.4 overs.
Thatcham took to the field, and opened up with Ediriweera and Edgcombe, and quickly made inroads with Ediriweera inducing a false stroke from Dimbylow, with Jenkins taking the catch at mid-on. Edgcombe then followed this by having Podbury caught by Ediriweera at slip, the first of 4 slip catches for the Sri Lankan. After good opening spells from both, Edgcombe turned to youngster Paul Jenkins, and veteran Chris Bird. The change immediately worked with Edgcombe taking a sharp catch at gully off Jenkins to dismiss Konschel, and then Jenkins trapped the dangerous Ellison LBW off the last ball of his first over. In his following over, Jenkins produced an excellent away swinger to account for the experienced Podbury, to take his 4th wicket. Bird followed this up by deceiving Penny in the flight, who could only deflect a turning ball to Ediriweera at slip, and then Jenkins induced Dimblylow into a false cut, and Edgcombe took an easy catch at gully, With Challow now at 55 for 7, this was the first time that many Thatcham players had actually seen a Challow tailender, and hopes were high that a quick finish would result. Jenkins continued with some great deliveries, mixed with several wides, and the score had moved onto 75, when Jenkins produced another rising delivery and Bartholomew took an easy catch behind the stumps. The excitement of getting an excellent 5 wicket haul was too much for Jenkins and this resulted in a 12 ball over, with 6 wides being bowled. Edgcombe then turned to Liversedge, playing his first game in 2 years, and Ansell, and it was the latter who was first to strike, getting Phillips to edge to Ediriweera for his 4th slip catch. Liversedge then followed suit in the next over, having Hall caught at gully by Edgcombe, to leave Challow all out on 101, from 28.4 overs.
