Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Henley 2 on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at **12.30pm** earlier start
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs
Match report
Thatcham’s disappointing season ended in familiar fashion on Saturday with another close defeat in their final game at home to Henley.
With relegation already determined, Thatcham took the opportunity to blood some of their young talent and despite much promise, their inexperience eventually told in somehow losing a game that they really should have won.
In reply to Henley’s 244-7 declared, the home side started slowly before Ross Schreiber finally found the form he’d threatened all season with a series of impeccable drives. Alongside Josh O’Flynn, the pair dominated the Henley attack and were closing in on a century opening stand before O’Flynn edged Wheeler to second slip for a fine 47. The wicket inevitably slowed things slightly but Schreiber still took advantage of anything loose and in partnership with skipper Dan Stone (29), took Thatcham past the 150 mark without further incident.
Having kept the run rate at a comfortable level and with Schreiber looking set for a big score, Thatcham seemingly had things under control but Henley got the breakthrough they desperately needed when a sharp piece of fielding saw Schreiber (81) fall short of his mark attempting a quick single. A couple of wickets followed shortly after, but Chris Rochfort (23) and Chris Bird regained control and with some lusty blows from Dan Stephenson helping the cause, just 5 runs were required from the final over.
But as so often this season, Thatcham could not convert their chance. Bird (24) fell first ball trying an unnecessary big shot and when Stephenson departed next ball to an avoidable run out, Henley were back in the game. A scampered single and a couple of dot balls followed and with just one ball remaining, the home side still needed four with just one wicket in hand. The accuracy of Wheeler (4-74) proved too much for Tommy Mather but as the ball went through to the keeper, Matt Taylor attempted an inexplicable run, allowing the keeper to throw down the stumps and claim a highly improbable Henley victory.
Henley had earlier set a competitive total with skipper Peter Dean (56) and Chris Ellison (68) making comfortable runs against Thatcham’s opening attack. The introduction of Scott Gibson (1-30) began to drag things back, but it was the spin partnership of Chris Bird (3-51) and 14-year old Tommy Mather that kept Thatcham in the game. Mather (0-58) was particularly impressive on debut, whilst skipper Dan Stone picked up 3 quick wickets as Henley chased runs at the death.
Thatcham can once again take heart from a competitive performance and with 7 teenagers in their line-up showed plenty of potential, but they know they’ll have to convert these close encounters if they’re to achieve their goal of returning to the top flight next season.
