Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Datchet 2 on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Second in the table Datchet 2nd met fourth in the table Thatcham 2s at Brownsfield on Saturday and despite outplaying their opponents in all departments, the home side just missed out on maximum points.

Datchet won the toss and inserted Thatcham on a good surface and Jamie Young set about anything pitched short to post a quick 23 before smashing another half-tracker straight to mid-wicket, Thatcham 30 for 1 off 8. Young’s opening partner Matt Watts worked hard to steady one end but saw a succession of partners come and go before trying to work another delivery through his favoured backward point area off Abramson, Watts departing for a useful 41 and Datchet in the driving seat, having reduced the home side to 98 for 5 from 28.

The experienced middle order pairing of Mike Beaumont (37) and Robb Fraser took a cautious approach to their first few overs together and then restored order with a combination of punishing boundaries and well taken singles, adding a match changing 91 runs before Beaumont suffered another pull to the calf muscle that saw him miss two games earlier in the season, resulting in confusion and an unnecessary run out which might have affected Fraser (51) who departed soon after having completed an excellent half-century including seven boundaries and a maximum, Thatcham 195 for 7.

Pushing for maximum points and an ideal target score of 240, Nick Voller added 14 not out but the home side’s innings petered out to a slightly below par 224 all out in the 50th over, Williams finishing 3 for 46, Shaf 2 for 38 and Abramson 2 for 37.

Thatcham retained the old ball after tea and Nick Bishop and Nick Voller made early inroads into the top order, reducing Datchet to 40 for 4 and effectively ending the visitors chances of victory, as Thatcham’s bowlers and fielders exerted control over their opponents, maintaining excellent performance levels to restrict the scoring rate to 3 an over throughout the second innings.

Bishop took a bow from the attack and Tim Burnett worked hard with Voller (excellent return of 2 for 35 from 18) as the pair took the new ball and after a useful stand between Doddington (25) and White (39), the pressure began to take its’ toll, Datchet having no real answer to Thatcham’s relentless drive and enthusiasm.

Bishop (4 for 47 from 15) rang the changes well, returning to snap up Tunny with a sharp return catch and Burnett (3 for 46 from 13) accounting for Williams and Shaf, Datchet hanging on at 130 with one wicket and nine overs still remaining. However, despite a number of near chances, last pair Abramson (13 not out) and skipper Nick Kenny (8 not out) dug in and saw their side to safety, adding 21 for the last wicket and picking up an extra batting point for their efforts.

Thatcham will be slightly disappointed not to have made it past the finishing post but still picked up 15 points and can be very pleased with their efforts considering they began the game with only four front line bowlers and showed a lot of application to take nine wickets on a good batting track.
