Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Amersham on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 5 wickets
Match report
A solid all round performance enhanced by a sensational century on his return to club cricket by Berkshire captain Julian Wood ensured Thatcham stayed in the chasing pack for the Thames Valley title at Brownsfield on Saturday with a comfortable 5 wicket victory against visiting Amersham.
Amersham skipper Chris Owen won the toss and chose to bat first on a scorching day with a Brownsfield strip that looked full of runs, but a tight opening spell by Wood and Faisal Ali reduced the visitors to just 28 runs from the first 10 overs. Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson replaced Ali after 6 overs from the Middlesex academy paceman and he provided the breakthrough, A Viney caught and bowled for a patient 28. With two left handers at the crease Johnson was replaced by Nick Bishop who had R Viney caught at mid-on by Faisal Ali for 39, Amersham 124-2 at the 34 over drinks interval. Julian Wood was brought back into the attack and this reaped immediate rewards as he took out Sowden for 27, courtesy of a fantastic one handed catch by Chris Wright behind the stumps, and then Jackson chipped to Johnson at wide mid off for 15. Fleming who had batted well for his 36, then hit Johnson for two 4’s in an over before coming down the track to the 5th delivery and was beaten and stumped and Colquhoun who struck some decent shots did the same thing and departed for 38. It was left to Owen and Stephenson to take the visitors up to 242-6, a competitive total, but given the condition of the wicket and the lightning fast outfield, it was one that seemed 35/40 runs of a real test for the home side. Wood was the pick of the home attack with 2-40 from 14 hostile overs, Johnson weighed in with 3-75, Nick Bishop 1-35 the other wicket taker.
The home side needed a good start so Wood was promoted up the order to open with James Ettridge against the old ball all spin attack of Mustafa Rajabali and leg spinner Atkinson. The latter had a confident caught behind shout turned down before Wood had reached double figures, but the Berkshire skipper survived and took the score up to 45 from 9 overs before Thatcham lost Ettridge, lbw to Atkinson for 9. Gavin McDonald followed in the same manner for 2, which bought Nick Shea in to join Wood and the partnership of the match resulted with both batsmen in bullish mood, striking anything loose to the boundary and both playing some sublime shots and passing fifty with ease.
Wood went on to post his first league hundred for Thatcham, hitting five 6’s and twelve 4’s and with 92 added by the pair and the partnership taking Thatcham up to 179-2 from 30 overs, the hard work had been done. Wood went fell for a fine 109 to the spin of Jackson bringing skipper Duncan Johnson to the crease to join Shea. They added another 54 runs before Shea fell for 73 with the winning post in sight and although Thatcham lost Matt Denness, run out for 1 attempting a 2nd run, Johnson swept Rajabali over square leg for 6 and the target was chased down in 46.1 overs for the loss of 5 wickets, Johnson unbeaten on 29 and Chris Wright 4 not out.
The 20 point haul leaves Thatcham in 3rd spot, tucked in behind leaders Kew and 2nd placed Harefield with just over half of the season remaining.
Thatcham travel to bottom placed Hampton Hill on Saturday and with the London side yet to win a game, it’s a big chance for a maximum point haul to put pressure on Kew who entertain an improving Chesham side, whilst 2nd placed Harefield would expect to win handsomely at High Wycombe 2’s.
