Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v Swindon on Sun 06 Aug 2006 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
Thatcham Town cruised to a much needed 7 wicket victory this Sunday at Brownsfield versus Swindon.
Having lost the toss Thatcham were in the field and immediately chances were created through the bowling of Ben Cruise and Gavin Ansell. Although these chances were created none were taken and after 8 overs the visitors were 22 without loss having seen 5 catches go begging. Then to the relief of many fielders Cruise bowled Pinchin for 4. Ansell bowled out of his skin at the other end but failed to produce a wicket (mainly due to the butter fingers of a fielding side he had as support). Thatcham then resorted to an early spin combination of Chris Bird and Nick Bishop. With the Thatcham side looking “not quite there” (possibly something to do with the beach party the night before) Swindon looked comfortable as the two spinners struggled to find their rhythm early on posting 86 for 1 at drinks (21overs). It was clearly the re-hydration the Thatcham side needed and immediately Bird and Bishop both struck in their very next over both wickets being caught by two guilty fielders rectifying their earlier mistakes. At this point of the game it was clear that the clever Thatcham selection of three spinners on a turning pitch
was key to their success. After the guile of Bishop bowling 9 overs for 35 for 1 wicket his replacement John Williams (6 overs 2 for 33) took to the turning track like a fish to water. Bird bowling 2 maidens to finish his quality spell ending with 2 wickets for just 29 runs from his 9 overs. Finally the introduction of speciality death bowler Nathan Redmond finished the last 5 overs from one end in scintillating style collecting 1 wicket for just 19 runs as the visitors couldn’t find the rope from the youngsters disciplined line and length. The visitors ending their innings on a disappointing 169 for 8 wickets from 42 overs.
Thatcham Openers Bishop and Paul Jenkins were looking for a positive start but that was thwarted by the Swindon spinner Parkinson using the old ball. Jenkins (8) departing in the 4th over trying to sweep on a turning bouncing track getting a top edge for a regulation catch by the keeper. Skipper Simon Rider then joined Bishop and was also removed in quick succession without scoring as he was caught at short leg also off the spin of Parkinson. This brought the class of Matthew Denness to the crease who grafted the next couple of overs against the spin without looking to score heavily. Then in the spinners 8th over, Denness decided to remove him from the attack scoring a heavy 13 from the over. This forced the Swindon Skipper to take the new ball earlier than he would have liked and brought himself into the attack. With Bishop holding an end up and hitting the occasional boundary it left Denness to capitalise on any delivery he felt wasn’t up to scratch which as you can imagine by his standards was most of them! Denness finally departed for a blistering 59 including 11 boundaries. His departure brought Nathan Redmond to the crease who didn’t hesitate in continuing were Denness had left off, stroking an unbeaten 24 including 5 boundaries and Bishop ending on 57 not out taking the Thatcham total to 173 for 3 in the 33rd over.
A job well done sees Thatcham claim their second successive win at home but with a visit from the strong side of Challow next Sunday they face a big challenge to make it three wins on the trot.
