Yateley v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 9 Wickets

Match report Richard Scudamore, take note; we’ve had our enforced mid season winter break and it did us no harm whatsoever. In fact, you could argue it came at just about the right time for us. With that in mind, there isn’t too much to say about Saturday; aside from the game was over just in time for us to watch Graeme Smith drag on…yep, done and dusted by 3:15pm. And no-one mentioned ‘early finish’…

Probably the most crucial toss of the season, for a variety of reasons, went in favour of Stoney and so we were fielding. Not a bad decision really; despite two dry days leading up to the game the marshland surrounding the square was going to be a test of even the best timer of a cricket ball. Things started pretty tamely although the customary first ball drop made a slightly unwelcome appearance…again. In hindsight it really didn’t make a difference. Having racked up 19 from the opening six overs Yateley’s youthful over confidence began to shine through as just eight overs later they were staring straight down the barrel at 30-6. Somehow they hadn’t learnt from the home fixture, believing that Gibbo is the best candidate to take on early doors. I think his 3-17 proves otherwise. The surprise, however, was happening from the other end.

Forget the bouncer – yorker tactic…employ the straight ball – straight ball tactic. It has much better results. In a marathon twelve over spell Jenks managed to include pretty much every eventuality on a cricket field. We only had; the customary massive wide, palming a return catch to mid on (claiming an assist with that), attempting to give Capi-tan Ross some polka dots, the worst attempt at a run out in TVL history and yes, bowling at least four straight balls. 90 minutes later and six wickets in the bag the legs finally gave up with the home side 40-9. I’m also struggling to remember the last time Webb’s conceded a boundary in a league game…anyway; he picked up the final wicket in his seventh over to complete the rout - Yateley all out for 40 in the just the 27th over. Makes a change from it being us really…

Despite there not being much to do in the outfield the discipline was good – apart from the occasional run out attempt. We caught well yet again; Willow taking two sharp chances around the bat to suggest that the ‘round the corner’ position to Gibbo does in fact bring wickets. Bowling figures were inevitably economical; Gibbo’s 3-17 coming from his ECB guided spell of seven, Webbs’ 1-3 from just shy of seven and Jenks 6-18 from twelve. Almost forgot Willow’s one maiden over that contained the two worst attempts at a reverse sweep. Not really a high risk shot on a damp pitch and with three fielders behind square on the off side…hmm.

The run chase was comfortable as it should be, although one or two…perhaps even four went diving for pads as Capi-tan Ross was picked off second ball for two. Jonno (18 no) and Stoney (18 no) putting the game to bed inside eight overs, treating any ball with complete distain – rightly so, despite the first over there didn’t appear to be too much on offer. Still, had to be done and 20 points is a very good return for just a couple of hours work.

Thankfully Stoney declined the offer of an unofficial T20 game. Don’t think it was just Yateley unhappy with the early finish; not entirely sure we’d be welcome back to watch the 2s in a hurry....give us a Beer, nerf ball, some conkers, a covert sniper, and a few slow hand clapped choruses of MONG, MONG, MONG and we’re away.

I digress; next week sees the return local derby and with Newbury being rolled for 54 at Kidmore End who knows what the score will be down at Brownsfield. So long as the sun stays out and we win, we can’t possibly complain.
