Thatcham 2nd XI took the early season honours against local rivals Falkland 3rd XI in the first league game of the season with a comfortable 5 wicket win.
Things off the field didn’t quite go to plan for Thatcham as they could only field 10 men for the first 6 overs of the game thanks to a longer than expected queue in Screwfix, however on the field the opening pair of Winfield (1-30) and Taylor (1-21) did not disappoint as they bowled an excellent line and length giving the Falkland openers little to hit.

Falkland’s watchful batsmen took their total to 85 for 3 from 28 overs with all making starts, Richardson (21), Mohammed (25) and Piper (12) but none capitalising on their good work. Beal and Thomas found themselves at the wicket and posted an excellent 61 run fourth wicket stand with Beal leading the charge taking 20 from one unfortunate Monger (1-40) over.

The introduction of Moore to complement the already incumbent Mirchandani (0-71) proved to be Thatcham’s last bowling change as they bowled the final 16 overs unchanged. Both bowl well with Moore taking the reward of Thomas (28) to break the vital 4th wicket partnership. However this encouraged Beal to open his shoulders as he soon passed 50 and headed towards the 100 mark.

With Falkland, in the guise of Beal, upping the tempo, the total soon reached 200 and a maximum 10 batting points however Moore proved to be the difference as he removed Day to end the fifth wicket stand that had earned Falkland 54 runs . Then in a last devastating over Moore not only removed Beal for a superb 94 but reduced Falkland from a comfortable 213 for 5 to 213 for 9, finishing with final figures of 6-33 from 8 overs.

In contrast Thatcham’s response was not quite as watchful and low key as Watts took 11 from the first over and Thatcham’s league debutant Howell, still groggy from a ball strike to the head during fielding, edging to first slip from his second ball faced. Lewis entered the fray, but while contemplating how he was going to fit the shower pump he’d earlier purchased a Screwfix, forgot to strike the straight half volley and was bowled.

Edwards was next to come and go as he attempted one pull to many and top edged to mid-on leaving Thatcham 34 for 3. Falkand’s opening bowlers Day (2-49) and Naeem (2-26), who bowled a particularly good line and length weren’t yet finish as Watts finally fell uncharacteristically to a less than uppish cut short for 36.

Thatcham now 56 for 4 needed a change of fortune and the coming together of Winfield and Jack Young provided it. Both batted mindfully combining quickly run two’s and hard hitting boundaries to add 66 runs to the total in a 13 over spell that was only benefited Thatcham.

Winfield’s wicket for 29, Thatcham now 122 for 5 was Thatcham’s last, as the pair of Jack Young and Ravi Mirchandani combined to take Thatcham to victory with an unbeaten fifth wicket stand of 94. Jack Young providing the lead role with an faultless unbeaten 92 and Mirchandani supporting role of 36 not out, which gained some solace for his unlucky 14 over bowling spell earlier in the day, as the pair took Thatcham past the 213 run target with nearly 3 overs to spare.
