Match report A youthful Thatcham side entertained Falkland at Brownsfield and gave a good account of themselves.

Having won the toss, Falkland decided to bat on what looked a good Brownsfield wicket. A Bolan (74) and D Bloor opened up and got Falkland off to a good start before Bloor became Redmond’s (2-43) first victim. A Day them came to the wicket and helped Falkland to 63 before falling to Wylie (1-27).

B Thomas came to the crease and used some of his experience to help guide Falkland over the 100 mark. Young Tom Owen was introduced and immediately got reward in trapping Thomas in front for 16. The evergreen Carlisle joined Bolan and looked to dominate Owen. After a few blows though Carlisle was dismissed and soon after so was Bolan for a well played 74. Both victims went to young Owen (3-43); once again it outlined what potential this boy has.

Falkland finished on 202 of 42 overs with good contributions from Parry 29* and Martin 18. Will Harwood (7-0-26) was desperately unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two.

Chasing 203 for victory Thatcham opened up with youth and experience in Jenkins (12) and Cummuskey (46). After seeing of the opening attack Jenkins chased a wide one and was caught. Paresh Patel (29) came to the crease making his Thatcham debut, Patel looked good punishing anything loose and the score moved onto 81 at the halfway stage.

Melville followed shortly and now at 81-3 Thatcham needed a partnership. Bartholomew joined Cummuskey (46) and they took the score to 140 with 8 overs left. Thatcham lost another quick wicket and this brought Captain Redmond to the crease and the scoring started to accelerate. Thomas struck to bowl Redmond (21) and with 22 needed off the last over, Thatcham fell 10 runs short.

Good contributions from Bartholomew (43) and Cummuskey (46) but Thatcham just fell two overs short. Thatcham’s youngsters can take great pride in a spirited performance.
