Match report Thatcham kicked off the 2016 season with a comfortable 5 wicket win over East Woodhay at Malverley's on Saturday. With the previous weeks friendly against Purley being washed out, it was crucial to get some game time before the Thames Valley League kicks off on the 7th May.

East Woodhay had a bat first and it was Tristan Allen who took the first wicket of the season, Woodhay opener Nick Bird strangled down the leg side for 4. Allen's new ball partner Callum Johnson then bowled Toby Albert for 1 with an absolute beauty, clipping the top of off stump and just glancing the one bail from the wickets. Woodhay's two best players skipper Joe Lawrance and the classy Richard Dando then came together and looked to get the innings back on track. They took the total to 30 before the introduction of Josh O'Flynn saw the end of Lawrance, caught behind for 16. Dando continued to look a class above playing some fantastic attacking shots all around the ground and he found an able partner in Geoff Neale. The pair added 46 before Scott Gibson bowled Neale for 13. Mark Chapman joined Dando but three quick wickets killed any momentum Woodhay tried to impart on the innings. Dando had reached an excellent half century before falling to John Williams for 54, Chapman was caught and bowled by Chris Bird for 12 and then Ambar Chakravarty tried to smear Williams over the ropes and was caught and bowled for 4. Adam Kite (17) and Cameron Flack (10) batted sensibly, both reaching double figures before being dismissed by the wily Chris Bird and it was left to Darren Booth and Gavin Ansell to add a few late runs to get Woodhay up to a total of 152-9 from the 40 overs bowled.

All the bowlers chipped in, the pick was Chris Bird with 3-25 off 8 overs and he was ably supported by John Williams 2-41, Callum Johnson 1-21, Tristan Allen 1-17, Josh O'Flynn 1-17 and Scott Gibson 1-29.

Josh O'Flynn and Kieran Wood opened up for Thatcham against the Woodhay openers Adam Kite and Cameron Flack. The score had reached 18 when O'Flynn aimed an expansive drive at Kite and was caught in the slips by Nick Bird for 11. Jack Young joined Wood and was thankful for an immediate reprieve as Young edged Kite first ball but was put down in the slip cordon. Wood had reached a classy 30 from 31 balls until the introduction of Gavin Ansell saw him depart lbw. Young and Steve Bartholomew added a crucial 68 runs which broke the back of the chase before skipper Joe Lawrance turned to Cameron Flack to get a breakthrough. It was a good move from Lawrence as first Flack bowled Young for 51 and then a couple of balls later he was too quick for Duncan Johnson who played all round a full straight ball to depart for a duck. Steve Bird (2) came and went and it was left to Bartholomew and Callum Johnson to see Thatcham home in the 34th over, Bartholomew finishing with a fine unbeaten 39 and Johnson 4* with the score 153-5 at the close.

Cameron Flack was the pick of the Woodhat attack as he took 2-22 from his 8 overs, Adam Kite 1-44 from 8 and Gavin Ansell 2-37 from 8 were the other wicket takers.
