Match report Thatcham 4th XI had a comfortable 9 wicket victory over Basingstoke 5th XI at Sherfield on Loddon on Saturday.

Having elected to bat Basingstoke batted steadily but with a painfully slow outfield and a wicket with more bounce than of late, they were unable to build any partnership of note and lost wickets regularly. This was due in no small part to an inspired spell of controlled swing bowling by Gavin Ansell who took 5 for 30 in 21 overs and constantly troubled the Basingstoke batsmen. Andy Stephenson (3 for 16), Dominic Melville (1 for 44) and Micky Stone (1 for 4) were the other wicket takers, as Basingstoke were dismissed for 108 in 43.3 overs.

In reply the Thatcham openers Micky Stone and Adrian Bromhead took advantage of some wayward bowling early on to post the 4th XI’s first century opening partnership of the season. Although Bromhead was dismissed soon afterwards for a fine 37, Paul Sharp and Micky Stone, who finished on 46 not out, saw Thatcham home by 9 wickets.
