Match report Thatcham's fight for division 2 survival received a welcome boost on Saturday as they salvaged a crucial draw against fellow strugglers Burnham 2.
In a game interrupted and reduced due to several heavy downpours, Burnham racked up a challenging 196 from their 44 overs thanks mainly to Faisal Choudhary's well constructed 101. The returning Ryan Gilmour (1-27), back from a long term side injury, was the pick of the Thatcham attack, with Chris Bird (3-63) and Josh O'Flynn (2-26) also amongst the wickets.
The Thatcham reply got off to the worst possible start with both O'Flynn and Jack Andrews failing to trouble the scorers and with a period of consolidation required, Thatcham soon fell behind the required run rate. Peter Spriggs (45) batted solidly and with support from Jack Young (21), the two began to rebuild. But it was the partnership of Steve Bartholomew (39) and Will Wright that gave Thatcham hope as they aggressively set about the Burnham total. Bartholomew was in particularly fine form as the two combined some powerful hitting with excellent running and at 145-4, Thatcham were in a strong position to push for victory.
With overs running out, Thatcham had to score quickly and one big shot too many saw Wright depart for an excellent 30.It proved disastrous for Thatcham as 4 more wickets fell in quick succession and from a position of possible victory, Thatcham were now having to hang on to avoid defeat. It was vital that they didn't hand their close rivals any more valuable points and the experienced Stephen Bird and Chris Bird didn't disappoint, seeing out the final 3 overs to salvage what could prove a vital draw in the relegation battle.
