Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Chesham on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
Thatcham consolidated their position at the top of the Thames Valley Div 1 table with a 10 wicket demolition of Chesham at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Chesham always had the potential to be a banana skin for the leaders with a side that boasted Bradman Ediriweera, Hitesh Modi and Rob Maier, but skipper Duncan Johnson won another toss and had no hesitation in inserting the visitors on a wicket that looked seam friendly after the recent heavy rain and ex Thatcham overseas star Ediriweera and Hitesh Modi opened up for Chesham. Ali Naqvi and Dan Stephenson were on new ball duties for Thatcham and in his very first over it was 17 year old Stephenson that struck the first telling blow, Ediriweera caught by Chris Bird at slip for 1 and the home side were happy to see the back of the dangerous Sri Lankan. Stephenson continued his good form, next trapping Modi in the crease lbw for 7 and Chesham were 10-2 and in trouble. When Goddard was caught and bowled by Naqvi for 0 in the next over things went from bad to worse for the visitors and Rob Maier and Nick Turnbull needed to rebuild the innings. Stephenson had finished his allowed 6 over spell and had outstanding figures of 6 overs, 4 maidens, 2-4 and was replaced initially by a tidy spell from Paul Jenkins and then the left arm spin of Johnson. Maier and Turnbull had been together for 14 overs, but only added a further 25 runs to the total as the Thatcham bowlers kept things tight. Johnson found the breakthrough, Turnbull skying an attempted sweep to Naqvi at short backward square for 16 and it was then that Naqvi ripped out the Chesham middle order with J Rance and G Rance both departing lbw for 0 and then Helm bowled for 4 and Chesham were staring down the barrel at 50-7 in the 33rd over. Maier was still there though and he found an able partner in Bilbey who stuck around and put bat to ball to good effect before he was caught and bowled by Chris Bird for 24. It was only a matter of time before the home side wrapped things up and Naqvi came back to claim his 5th wicket, Porter caught by Paul Jenkins for 1 and when the last man Mahmood was run out for 0, Chesham were all out for a disappointing 111 of 51.2 overs with Maier left stranded unbeaten on 45 at the close of the innings. Naqvi was the pick of the home attack with 5-39 from his 22 overs, with Stephenson 2-4 from his 6, Johnson 1-15 from 10 and Chris Bird, 1-34 from his 8 overs also among the wickets.
Steve Wyatt joined Naqvi to open the reply for the home side as Chesham took the old ball and opened with the spin of Dave Porter and Hitesh Modi. Naqvi set the tone however as Porter’s first ball disappeared to the cover boundary and with 2 more boundaries to follow Thatcham had made the perfect start. Both Naqvi and Wyatt settled in as Chesham chopped and changed the bowlers in an effort to get a wicket and try and create some pressure, but 111 was never going to be enough and it took just the 21 overs for Thatcham to reach the target. Ali Naqvi was unbeaten on 68 at the close and Steve Wyatt finding his form and the middle of the bat to finish the game in style with four successive boundaries to finish on 46 not out as Thatcham racked up another 20 points in their quest for promotion.
The unbeaten run now continues for the 11th game and with basement side Tring Park 2’s the next visitors to Brownfield, Thatcham will continue to feel confident about keeping the run going.
The win was made all the more sweeter as Harefield were beaten by Kew and Thatcham have now opened up a gap of 15 points at the top of the TVL 1 table.
