Kew v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at **12.30pm** Earlier start time
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 86 runs

Match report Thatcham made it 11 wins from 15 starts on Saturday as they put an end to Kew’s own promotion hopes with an 86 run victory at Kew Green. A maximum 25 point was the reward to keep the 21 point cushion between themselves and Harefield, who also picked up 25 points on Saturday ahead of the big showdown at Brownsfield this weekend.

Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won another toss and decided to bat first and Ali Naqvi and Steve Wyatt opened up against the pacy Kew attack of Thomas and Pearce. Both the openers bowled fiery spells and beat the bat on a difficult track and progress was slow. Wyatt then took a nasty blow to the thumb courtesy of Thomas and had to retire hurt and Dan Stone took his place. Naqvi was beginning to settle though, and it didn’t take long before the ex-Pakistan international was finding the boundary with regularity, reaching a fine 50 in the process. Stone was also continuing his good form and both look settled until Stone fell to the spin of Bajaj, a good catch from Kew skipper Ed Knowles to send Stone on his way for 23. Danny Williams joined Naqvi and shared an excellent partnership of 91, Naqvi punishing the all Kew bowling and particularly harsh on young leg spinner Weeks, who bowled 2 overs for 35 runs and it wasn’t long before Naqvi reached 3 figures in a chanceless hundred. He continued to plunder the Kew bowling, before Bajaj finally got his man, Naqvi caught at long off by Dunusinghe for a brilliant 134. Thatcham were now firmly in the driving seat at 178-2 from 40 overs and looked to push on with quick runs for the latter stages of the innings. Johnson and Denness departed cheaply looking to up the tempo and Steve Wyatt came back to the crease briefly before being run out for 26. It was left to Williams and Jamie Young to continue the punishment and push their side up to a formidable 254-5 from the 52 overs, Williams finishing on a fine 48 not out and Young undefeated on 10 at the close.

With 48 overs in which to reach their target in a game they had to win to keep their title hopes alive, Kew really had to start well in their chase, but Naqvi had other ideas. Thatcham kept the old ball in the quest for reverse swing for the Pakistani all rounder and he showed his class in his 2nd over, Knowles edging through to Stone for 0. The big wicket though was South African run machine Bruce Friderichs and with the last ball of his 3rd over, Naqvi nailed him, bowled for 14 and Kew on the ropes. Mistry and Jadeja both looked good and played their shots until Johnson ripped one through left hander Jadeja’s gate and took his leg bail for 13. Sri Lankan Dunusinghe threatened for a short while, but a bowling change saw Nick Bishop get the better of him, bowled for 23. Pete Edgcombe was introduced into the attack and again made things happen, taking 2 quick wickets in a 6 over spell. Firstly the important wicket of Mistry, who had looked good for his 39 until Edgcombe got one to bounce and he looped a simple catch up to Johnson in the gully and then the big hitting Pearce departed lbw for 6. Kew were now 99-6 through 25 overs and all hope of winning the game had long gone and it was a now a case of whether Thatcham could take the 4 wickets needed for the win. Thomas and Baig came together and defiantly added 42 runs in 10 overs to slow the visitors progress until Naqvi was re-introduced into the attack with devastating effect. He bowled Thomas for 25 and then cleaned up Weeks for 8 and the end was near. It was left to skipper Johnson to win the game as Baig chipped a simple catch to Nick Bishop at long on for 16 and when Foster was trapped lbw for 0 in the 42nd over the victory was assured with time to spare as Kew were all out for 168. Naqvi was outstanding again with the ball to claim 4-43 from his 15 overs and he got good support from Johnson 3-59 from 13.2, Edgcombe 2-27 from 6 and Nick Bishop 1-16 from his 5 overs.

This now sets up the clash with Harefield with Thatcham enjoying a 21 point gap over their Middlesex rivals and it’s certainly a mouth watering game on the cards at Brownsfield on Saturday in what is now surely a two horse race for the TVL title.
